Yes he’s being doing well.

Whether or not you think reliving the original race experience is a good or bad thing is up to the individual. Clearly the competitors thought it was a good thing and good on them I say.
Again, I'm not knocking the race nor downplaying the difficulty, but to go into remote parts when you know you can call for a rescue is a far cry from going into them knowing you can't. I've sailed both ways, and can testify that it's a huge confidence booster knowing that a text message or press of a button will mobilize a massive rescue effort.
That's why I think the original was far more scary and awesome than any race that's done these days. But I'm not advocating we go back to that, either. Those days are gone and should not return, but let's not think that it isn't mentally easier today.

For better "sailor lingo", use "Trunnels" instead of "Treenails".
Oh, cottons ok for light air, hemp for medium, but when things go south, we want flax sails.

There isn't enough tree left to build wooden boats.

They will grow fast enough once we can get the CO2 levels high enough

For better writing skills, write 'treenail" or 'trenail' but pronounce 'trunnel' in the sailor's bar. Sorta like forecastle and fo'c'sle...

I am aware of its introduction for use in commercial shipping but, that does not relate to us.. we came much later.

The History…

In terms of the EPIRB’s history, it was first put into use in 1989. It delivers distress signaling services within a predetermined frequency band in all weather conditions. The geostationary satellite serves as the foundation of the EPIRB because it can instantly recognize signals almost anywhere on the planet. Therefore, these are positioned in oceanic vessels or containers and listed by a company known as the national search and rescue agency in that particular vessel traveling to any ocean or the deep sea.

A better reference for EPIRB history - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emerge...ng_radiobeacon

Re: GGR 2022 race, news and discussion

Several boats have made the Cape Town Gate.

Interesting how Kirsten brought her spinnaker down.

Narrator mentioned the reason why she brought it down under the foot of the mainsail.

Pretty neat but I still think that big sail might be tough to get down at times single handed in big seas especially if you leave it up too long.

No spinnaker socks allowed in the GGR.

It's called a Letter Box Drop and commonly used when short handed or in heavy weather as the sail is deflated and under control throughout the drop with little risk of it ending up in the water.

'S called a 'letterbox drop'. Even I know that. Reliable, and less to go wrong.
She knows her stuff, that Kirsten.

Re: GGR 2022 race, news and discussion

It was nice to see that takedown method.

I might need a spinnaker one day for my Bristol 27 if I sail down South below the Keys to the Dry Tortugas etc.

Up here we usually have pretty good wind or that's when I sail anyway.

15-20 knots is just about right.

My spinnakers always had the boom and sock.

Photos Pensacola Bay and Quietwater Beach.

Same bay they are testing the Americas Cup boat these days
