I've been following the 2018 Golden Globe anniversary
race intended to mimic the original in
boat types from that era. Most of the contestants in the original
race were monohulls, several ketches, as well as sloops and cutters. Nigel Tetley, who should have been the winner had he not driven his
boat Victress to destruction believing Donald Crowhurst to be ahead of him, was sailing a 40 foot
plywood ketch rigged
trimaran named Victress, and the notorious Donald Crowhurst, who merely pretended to be in the race while hanging about the South Atlantic, and ultimately committed suicide rather than face the shame of being found out was sailing Tiegenmouth Electron, also a 40 foot
ketch rigged
trimaran.
Both boats had structural issues, but never the less the 2018 GGR should NOT have excluded multihulls true to the era (1968).
Approaching
South Africa, there have been a several failures of
steering and
self steering systems, clearly one of the weak points of sailboats in general.
