GGR 2022 race, news and discussion
As CF member 'Ahun' said in the previous (2018) GGR thread, this race is now under way.
GGR stands for Golden Globe Race. The first one was held in 1968.
In 2018 a similar race was organised in boats from the era of the original race.
Now in 2022 the second 'retro' race is under way.
See here for details:
https://goldengloberace.com/live-tracker/
I can see 16 entrants at the moment. Keep the comments, facts and opinions coming.

Re: GGR 2022 race, news and discussion
Ok, I’ll get in early.
I’m worried.
I really feel like there’s a bit of “Ill show them how it’s done.” with this edition of the race.
Last time is was weird enough that mostly serious and competent sailors took part. After all, who’d have even heard of it?
But this time, I just feel like there’s a bit of chest beating going on.
I am very concerned that there may be a fatality with this edition. Without pointing fingers, some of these guys seem just a bit too cocky,
Anyway, I’d love to be wrong.
I will, as before, be watching Captain Coconut. Aside from parochial loyalty he is just an all round good kinda guy, and there’s nothing not to like about him.
Here’s to a safe race, fair winds and following seas to all the competitors.

I agree Mat with your points. Capt'n Coconut being the only Aussie, deserves our support.
I must say, I think this is one of the few occasions I prefer to be an armchair sailor.....and watch it from afar. Having said that, I plan to meet some of the boats when they come in my part of the world, that is, if work and weather cooperate.

Thanks for the reminder this was starting!
I'm kind of partial to Kirsten Neuschafer, she did an extensive refit in PEI last summer and folks kind of took her in as one of their own. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/princ...race-1.6015291

Re: GGR 2022 race, news and discussion
Watching Elliot Smith (USA) start the refit on his Gale Force 34 reminded me of all the crap I removed from my boat when I first bought it back in 2011.
Btw his own boat is a 1963 Pearson Triton 28.
Sailing my own boat Nortena (1963 Pearson Triton) around the East Coast of the USA and island hopping in the Bahamas in winters of 2018-2020.
Sort of fun though going through all the PO's junk and trying to figure everything out. He was quite the pack rat so I had a lot to remove as his last sail was coming back from a 2 year cruise to Florida and the Bahamas from Massachusetts.
I never met the PO of my boat and it was on the hard for 5 years before I bought it.
It will be interesting to check out all the old school full keel boats they are sailing this time.

Re: GGR 2022 race, news and discussion
Edit: I can find no reference to this on the web site so I must have misunderstood what they mentioned.
Did I hear correctly on the video that there is an approximately 12 month pause in the middle of the race? The discussion on the video implied that it was to miss winter storms in the southern ocean but it seems that a 12 month pause puts you back in the same situation seasonally.

Re: GGR 2022 race, news and discussion
So I kind of heard correctly but missed a critical point. Boats not arriving in Hobart by the 31st of January will not be allowed to proceed until early December to help insure safe(r) weather for the segment over to Cape Horn.
It sounds those arriving this late will not be disqualified but rather reclassified as Golden Globe Voyagers and will therefore be able to complete the race but will be out of the competitive race portion.

Sorry but I thought this was an invitation only race? Why would they invite unqualified or "dangerous" participants?
Am I missing something?

Re: GGR 2022 race, news and discussion
Looking at the list of some of the approved boats, I'm wondering what some of you guys might think of the potentials of the various designs?
Westsail 32 • Tradewind 35 • Saga 34 • Saltram 36 • Vancouver 32 & 34 • OE 32 • Eric (sister ship to Suhaili) • Aries 32 • Baba 35 • Biscay 36 • Bowman 36 • Cape Dory 36 • Nicholson 32 MKX-XI • Rustler 36 • Endurance 35 • Gaia 36 • Hans Christian 33T • Tashiba 36 • Cabo Rico 34 • Hinckley Pilot 35 • Lello 34 • Gale Force 34.
The boat I would wish for is just 2ft too long, an Alajuela 38, but I have a soft spot for the Hinckley.

Re: GGR 2022 race, news and discussion
Lots happening with the Golden Globe Race right now.
Looks like wind on the nose for much of the fleet......
Earlier guesses by some didn't pay off so they'll have to make it up later....

The invitation is to spend money on the entry fees.
Yes, there are all kinds of hoops to jump through, and I freely admit the entrants are all probably better sailors than I’ll ever be, but don’t be fooled by the fancy prose. I honestly believe many of the participants are not up to the task.
Like I said, I would very much like to be proven wrong.

Yes, I did look at the schedule to see if I could get down to Tassie to cheer on the coconut. But, all going well, I won’t have a boat capable of that journey when he is due.

Re: GGR 2022 race, news and discussion
I wish them well - hell of an undertaking and will be tough - only 5 finishers the last time and lots of boats lost their rigs.
Personally I don't see the point - traditional doesn't always mean better, just old and there is risk in smaller, less capable boats, more basic kit.
Anways best of luck to all of them.
