Over wintering in Greece and Italy?

Hello fellow sailors,

We are in the process of buying a 48 foot sailing boat (currently based in Turkey) and thinking of wintering her somewhere in the Med that we can reach from the UK by car the next spring, all laden up with gear for a cross Atlantic sail in 2018. Any advice on good, affordable places to winter with good yacht services? We'll be looking to install a water maker.
We have 10 weeks of sailing her in summer, so we have been looking as far afield as Italy.

Je comprends le français aussi, au cas où....

Thanks a million!

We bought our 48' Beneteau three years ago, and have kept her in Greece, and now Italy. Let me know if we can help you out. Pm me if you like, and my husband and I would be glad to share what we've learned

Re: Over wintering in Greece and Italy?

Hello,

We have our boat in Crotone this winter. In 2 weeks we expect to have it back on the water. Good people, good services and good price. In 2013, we left in in Brindisi but on the water. Very near the airport but a bit more expensive. If you need any information about these 2 locations please send me a pm.

Regards, Vladis

Greece will be cheaper than Italy but a further drive form the UK.

There are several options near Preveza, Greece (on the hard).

In Sicily you have Ragusa and Cala del Sole as reasonably priced options.

Re: Over wintering in Greece and Italy?

Northern Adriatic, italian side could be a good option.
Quite cheap and a lot closer to UK.
Good and reliable work.
Monfalcone, San Giorgio di Nogaro the first option that come to my mind!

we have sailed from Slovenia down Croatia, across Greek Islands to Turkey, boat currently in storage at Antalya. Have left the boat over winter at Dubrovnik, excellent service but higher priced than elsewhere. Currently looking for somewhere Sicily for next place to store the boat, considering Ragusa and Cala del Sole, or options in Sardinia.

All the popular winter layup locations (ashore or afloat) are listed for Greece, Adriatic, and Sicily on the relevant Mediterranean pages of my website.

That's a lot of text to explore. So a selection of possibilities is marked on each page's map to help your search.

Also, at the bottom of each page is a more complete list of layup and wintering options for each area page. Hunt through the text to see more detailed descriptions for each location - local transport, links to the website etc.

A warning. Is the boat you are buying VAT paid? If not, you'll have to import it into Europe (assuming you're a European resident). Also, if it is VAT paid, you should check with HMRC whether it loses its VAT paid status if it changes hands in Turkey. More about that on the "Going Foreign" section of the website.

The website is very easy to find any time you need it. Just Google "JimB"

Re: Over wintering in Greece and Italy?

Hi Rach I think all the info has been covered. We are wintering in levkas as we stay in the water and live aboard - to throw an different idea last year we wintered in Cartagena Spain great yard and facilities all though not as cheap as Greece - ( cheaper than uk) good yard but they don't allow you to antifoul - or almriemar is a popular option as it's cheap / easy to drive to/ and you can do your own work on the boat , just thought I would mention it - but if you have your heart set on Greece stay with the other ideas - PM me if you want other info and I will try and help . Anne
