I noticed my new Yanmar engine did the same, with using the old prop. I found out the prop is somewhat undersized, but the main issue for the apparent engine over speed was due to the pulse setting...

If your through hull is open, regardless of whether it's for the tank dump or the direct discharge side, you may be "uncovering" the opening in the hull when heeled over. This would allow the smell...
