Re: Foiling in Future? Production Boats with Foils

While foiling looks impressive, I don't see it being a practical option for an average cruising production boat any time soon. Sure you'll be able to buy production boats with foils in a year or two,...

Re: Hot Nanni! (4190)

We had overheating problems with our engine. It turned out to be the exhaust elbow coking up and choking the flow of cooling water. By the time I had discovered this I had replaced the water pump...

Re: New to us yacht Beneteau 473

I recently delivered a 473 from Hobart to Melbourne. It was a very pleasant trip and the boat sailed nicely. Only minor criticism I had was that the tabbing of the rudder tube to the hull and...

Re: bluewater - hanse / swan / oyster

Swan is probably the pick of those marques, followed by Oyster with Hanse a distant 3rd and I would imagine that the price tags will reflect this, but hell, if you are gonna spend several million on...

Re: Problem with flowcoat not drying

It is my understanding that flowcoat is not an epoxy, but a polyester resin base. As such, you will struggle to get flowcoat to go off if applied over epoxy.

Re: AIS Antenna

We use our rather ordinary VHF aerial, mast mounted, with a splitter at the instrument panel. We pick up AIS from commercial shipping typically about 45 miles out, and often to 60-70 miles (if it is...

Re: Making Ex-Racer My Cruiser . . . Am I Mad ?

We really are not sure, Jim. Between now and settlement we will slip Insatiable and give her some TLC below the waterline, then move back on board. I think we are required to hang around until Lisa's...

Re: Making Ex-Racer My Cruiser . . . Am I Mad ?

I dunno, Jim. I know little about real estate. I felt like we got a pretty good price, but it did sell quite quick and we will never know if we would've gotten more if we had held out for longer.......

Re: Making Ex-Racer My Cruiser . . . Am I Mad ?

Re: Making Ex-Racer My Cruiser . . . Am I Mad ?

Outstanding work Jim, great story.

I have never subscribed to the "carry the lightest anchor you can get away with" school of racing. I carry a heavy anchor and more chain chain the "blue book"...

Re: Making Ex-Racer My Cruiser . . . Am I Mad ?

The serious answer to your question is an aluminium danforth of the size indicated in the racing rules of sailing. This is an anomoly in that all other anchors except the danforth are required to be...

Re: How Big is Your Refrigerator?

We have about 1.5 cubic feet of freezer and 3.0 cubic feet of fridge. This works for us. But, to be honest, I think fridge space is like a suitcase... you fill what you have, whatever the size.

Re: Making Ex-Racer My Cruiser . . . Am I Mad ?

Congrats! I hope your live-aboard experience is every bit as rewarding as ours.

In fact, currently, we are land-bound. We decided to sell our house, so we moved back in for nearly 2 months now, to...

Re: Insurance panic in QLD - what do liveaboards do?

Try phoning an obscure insurance broker in Hobart called Insurance Masters. They got us a really really good deal for our insurance, with an agreed value (very unusual in Australian boat insurance)....

Re: Trolling from sailboat

We use hand lines for trolling, with a heavy gauge line and a big heavy "spoon" type lure, or a large heavy sliver wobbler. We pull in any catches by hand. We have done ok with various types of tuna,...

Re: Singlehanding a J44

We have an older racing boat with quite complicated rig... 3/4 fractional, with running backstays and checkstays as well as a masthead backstay. It was designed to be raced with a crew of 9 or 10......

Re: Help me design my RTW loft (Albin Vega 27)

A couple of thoughts
3 reef main, with the 3rd reef being deep enough that your sail area is equivalent to a trisail is imperative. Just thinking about the logistics of setting a trisail in storm or...

Re: New, have $10K, family, and baby want to live aboard...

For me the crux of the issue here isn't whether or not it is possible to buy a boat and sail around the world with a young family, because I don't doubt that it is. But firstly, i'd say if you wanted...

Re: Jacklines - how to?

On the subject of jackstays:
Aside from the standard jackstays that run the full length of the boat along the side decks, it is a good idea to fit hard points for an additional jackstay that runs...

It ain't likely to be the gonna be the bolts that fail, nor the cleats: If anything is it likely that the cleat and bolts are gonna pull clean out of the deck, especially if appopriate backing plates...

Re: How to measure solar panel current

Without showing my working out, I would expect your 50w solar panel to be able to replace a draw of 25 watt x 10 hours (i.e approx 20 amp hours) only on a very clear very sunny day, i.e. in ideal...
