Re: Sailing Across Lake Michigan

Here's my recipe for crossing Lake Michigan (https://www.sailfarlivefree.com/2012/09/our-recipe-for-crossing-lake-michigan.html).

It's a great crossing and very cool to be mid-lake with no land...

Re: What nav

The 86 series Garmin MFDs look really nice and function smooth from what I've seen at the boat shows.

Also, lots of good marine electronics info/reviews over at Panbo: The Marine Electronics...

Re: 2004 Beneteau 473 (Tortola)

This would make my short list if it were here in the Great Lakes. I've been aboard a local 473 several times and there strike a good balance between space, sailing performance and budget for our...

Re: Outboards, Freshwater only ??

Also, there are some outboards made specifically for saltwater use that have some less corrosive parts, in some cases different paint, and dedicated flushing ports.

Re: 35' or so, Great Lakes (Canadian)

Lots of good Great Lakes capable cruisers in that price/size range. I'll put in another plug for Catalina 34's/36's. Both are decent sailing boats with cruiser friendly layouts and readily available...

Re: Flicka 20 too small for liveaboard?

Get on one and see for yourself. As a pure liveaboard, there are much better (and more affordable) boats. But if sailing, single-handing, offshore passages and "the smallest/simplest thing to get the...

Re: Trailerable, cheap, seaworthy for Newfoundland

A few to consider:

- Tom Thumb 24
- Albin Vega 27 (not sure these are "trailerable", but I've seen more than one on a trailer)
- Allegra 24
- Com-Pac 23

Re: Center cockpits under 40ft?

Since the 9.2c is the frontrunner, how about the 11.0c or the newer S2 35cc?

Re: Safe connection for 2 shore power cords

Yup, I'd actually say that's more common than shutting of the breaker where I'm from.

Safe connection for 2 shore power cords

Is it safe to connect two shore power cords (same amps) together without a watertight connector/threaded sleeve?

I've got a 50' standard 30 amp Marinco shore power cord and I'd like to attach my...

Re: Practical advice sought - kids safety and security

Pick up a cheap window/door alarm from Home Depot. They're about $5 each and can easily be removed when the charter is complete.

Something like this....

Re: Lazy Jacks - do I REALLY need them?

They're cheap and they work. And they make dropping the main so much easier. I still need to use sail ties to secure everything, but often this can wait until I'm back at the dock. Dropping the main...

Re: Universal M25 cuts out after 6 minutes.

I'd start with the fuel filters. Depending on which model M25 you have, there are likely either 2 or 3 fuel filters. Check/change the Racor (or other brand) filter and separator between the fuel tank...

Re: Thoughts on this boat as a dinghy

A few random thoughts:

- It would be nice to know the weight/passenger/hp capacities.
- Is the outboard plate made out of wood? Metal would be my preference.
- Looks like the middle seat is...

Re: What is this?

I think I know that boat, and if so, she isn't originally from the Great Lakes. In any case, I'm going with "ice cutter". I'm guessing that jagged edge would only work on really thin ice.

FYI - I...

Re: Which is a safer direction to head/turn when overpowered?

Generally if conditions allow, we'll turn up into the wind to bring the boat back up from a deep heel and make an assessment.

It sounds like you're talking about a short term, quick fix for a...

Re: Best charter company in bvi

How do you define "best"? Best boats? Best service? Best maintenance? Best location/facilities? Best value? Best prices? I'm not sure there's any one company that checks all the boxes but I bet...

As Mainesail warns in this post (https://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/installing_a_marine_battery_charger), it is not recommended to use an automotive charger on a boat, in case that's what you're...

Re: My marina was supposed to wash my boat... Painted it too what would you do?

I would simply return their call and mention that you don't recall requesting bottom paint and were never asked which paint you wanted applied. Ask if they have documentation of the request. They...

Re: Truth or Perception

Just my opinions/likely choices if I were in your shoes:

1) I wouldn't choose my boat based on this. I've had both and think both are fine (with trade-offs) if properly rigged and designed.

Re: We are In Love!

Of those you mentioned, the Tartan 37 is probably the best (build quality, room, sailing ability, etc.) given good condition, but I'd be surprised if you find one for $20k.

While I like the...

Re: Pocket Cruiser/Gunkhole express advice

How about this O'Day 25 (https://nmi.craigslist.org/boa/4998173688.html)? She checks most of the boxes, though I personally am not crazy about an outboard for use on the big lake when there's a swell...
