Edible Fish Book / Encyclopedia

Does anyone know of one that covers the earth's fishes?
I have Ken Schultz's Fishing Encyclopedia but am looking for a more detailed book showing the fish, whether exdible or not, and if there is some risks from toxins, how to test, etc.
I have the survival manuals from my stint in the USA. I am looking for a more concise list.

Good luck with this. I searched for the same thing a couple of years ago to no avail. I don't know if it exists. Maybe we should make one and get rich and famous.

Best one I have found is Cruisers handbook of fishing by Scott and Wendy Bannerott. Not the best illustrations but I haven't poisoned myself yet!

I have a very good book called The Encyclopedia of FISH Cookery by A.J. Mclane It describes just about any kind of fish or shellfish,squid, octopus, etc. you can imagine, how to identify them, clean them and even many very good recipes for them. I have had the book for about 25 years now and use it often. It is a big book, about 500 pages and was quite expensive but worth every penny. You can "Google" it for more information.

First check this out for yourself as I may be misquoting, but

I was watching one of those televangilists once and he claimed that the bible tells that all fish with ( I think he said scales and fins) were edible, and he claimed that science backed that up. I think it was that bald dude. Sorry I don't know which book or the name of the show.

I guess it is true that all fish can be eaten if one is hungry enough. There will be a big difference between eating a nice grilled grouper steak and a fillet of oily menhaden, both have scales and fins.

I don't think you can have it all - comprehensive & concise.

Most kinds of fish, encountered by anglers are edible; but the organs of some species are always poisonous to man (Fugu/Pufferfish); other fish can become toxic because of elements in their diets (Ciguatera) and others by mishandling after catching (Scombroid). There are other fish that are venomous (Lionfish, Stingrays, etc).

Like mushrooms, those fish that are poisonous cannot, without personal knowledge of those types, be distinguished from their edible counterparts. Frequently local customs can be relied upon.

A comprehensive publication on the subject is entitled "Dangerous Marine Animals" by Dr. Bruce Halstead.

Not my preferred scientific reference book (and certainly not as recieved from "bald dude" on TV), but Leviticus*, in the Old Testament, specifies those things that are unclean, an abomination, and not to be eaten (or touched), which includes all seafood that lacks both fins and scales .

* Leviticus 7:21, 9:12, 10:10, 10:12, 11:7, 11:8, 11:13, 11.23, 11:41, and perhaps others.
