Re: Share Your Favorite Music of the Sea!

I will just stick to XM radio and Escape to Margrativille and Jimmie Buffet's choices which includes lots of music what is listed on this thread

Nice picks! Of course the Decemberists, why didn't I think of them? Personally I think Colin Meloy is a musical genius. You gotta see em live for the full effect though, it's really performance art as much as anything....

From the new album-

Re: Share Your Favorite Music of the Sea!

This one has been with me since I first heard it in the summer of 71 while working in a park on Lake Superior.

This one my Dad had a record of. Being it's in German, I figure you English speakers won't understand it, but it speaks of a life at sea. Pet Clark did an English version but it gets pretty hacked up in the translation.

Re: Share Your Favorite Music of the Sea!

Here's the translation:
Seemann lyrics by Lolita

Seemann, deine heimat is das meer

Seemann, laß das Träumen,
Denk' nicht an zuhaus.
Seemann, Wind und Wellen,
Rufen dich hinaus:

Deine Heimat ist das Meer,
Deine Freunde sind die Sterne,
Über Rio und Shanghai,
Über Bali und Hawaii.
Deine Liebe ist dein Schiff,
Deine Sehnsucht ist die Ferne
Und nur ihnen bist du treu
Dein Leben lang.

Seemann, laß das Träumen,
Denke nicht an mich.
Seemann, denn die Fremde,
Wartet schon auf dich:
Deine Heimat ist das . . . .

Sailor translation by SabreKai

Sailor, your home is the Sea.

Sailor, leave your dreaming
Don't think of your home
Sailor, wind and wave
call you out

Your home is the sea
Your friends are the stars
Over Rio and Shanghai
Over Bali and Hawaii
Your love is your ship
Your longing is the distant
and only that holds you faithful
your whole life long.

Sailor, leave your dreaming,
Don't think of me
Sailor, for the foreign lands
are waiting now for you

Your home is the sea.
your friends are the stars
over rio and shanghai
over bali and hawaii
your love is your ship
your longing its the distant
and only that holds you faithful
your whole life long.

This sentiment goes back for centuries. When I was a lad, I read a book on cruising, which had a part of an old Spanish poem from the 15th century on the front page.

My ship is my all,
My only god,
My life, My liberty

From Scansion del Pirata, authour unknown.

I often think I've wasted a goodly part of my life, caught up in the flash of aviation. I've always been torn between sky and sea, and spent the first half of my life in aviation. But when I hear that song by Lolita, it speaks to me on a level that aviation never did.

Aviation is a flash in the pan, the sea and sailors are eternal.
