Recommended Web Hosts

Hi all.

I am considering changing to a new web host for my basically marine web pages. Does anyone know if Cruisers Forum provides such a service?

Any suggestions based on experience gratefully accepted.

Re: RECOMMENDED WEB HOSTS

theres countless hosting services out there Tore, just select any cheap one. CF.com is a forum, it does not provide web hosting.

Re: RECOMMENDED WEB HOSTS

CF does not provide hosting but that's kind of a neat idea.

I use HostGator.com in the USA and they also open a Brazil datacenter HostGator.com.br. You want the server as close to your viewers as possible. So if the site is for people outside of Brazil then the US is probably a better choice.

We use Dreamhost for our Bus. in the US. Unlimited storage & unlimited bandwidth. Happy so far and cheap. Really have never noticed it down.

Whatever you do do not try to run a SQL reliant site (like wordpress) on godaddy shared servers... They put thousands of sites on these and it just does not work... They now offer cloud hosting which is a bit better but still not great. I have had great luck with 1and1 vps

Bluehost now
Lunarpages - used to use but migrated to Bluehost a number of years ago because of service issues. Never had a problem with Bluehost

Realize these are semi-professional hosting services...meaning they provide you with databases, apache web services etc etc...and being a programmer helps.

I put cloud based off the rack services like Amazon in a professional category and don't recommend them for your needs.

Re: Recommended Web Hosts

I've been using RealProHost for about 10 years and have never thought of switching, reasonably priced and their support is great. Wordpress flies on the server I'm on, it's a standard Apache/CPanel server setup.

Re: Recommended Web Hosts

For a weblog/blog I can recommend TypePad

If anyone needs to ask for a webhost here, it's my guess that we're not dealing with a web geek and thus a good weblog with a strong support behind it is much better than some site where you're supposed to start uploading html files.

TypePad is a paid service. This means you get your own site, free of commercials etc.

ciao!
Nick.

Excuse me but Sinbad is a regular contributor to the OPENCPN forum and is far from a computer illiterate.

Long time BlueHost customer. Nothing but great things to say about them. Wildly happy with every aspect of their product, service and support. Mail, Web, Blog, C-Panel... all great. And, their tech support answers the phone! They answer your questions!

Re: Recommended Web Hosts

G,day Tore,

We have been using Talkspot.com for more than 6 years.

It was developed by Ken and Roberta Williams. They were the founders of Sierra Games. Ken and Roberta are now cruising the world on their 68' Nordhaven 'San Souci'.

talkspot started as a free site, however it has grown into something bigger. We now pay a very small annual fee but for this we get our own dot com name and unlimited size as well as a lot of very usefull 'widget' tools and very good technical support.

The best thing about the host is that if you need any technical support Ken has a team that jump straight to it. We have often PM,ed Ken and even when he was in the middle of a crossing from Alaska to Japan he personally responded and gave me the advice I needed.

There are a lot of host sites out there however I think Talkspot is the only one owned and operated by someone who is sympathetic to a sailors
needs.

We have been living aboard and sailing through Asia for the past few years. We can update blogs with a simple email even from sailmail.

We use a little Photoshop and Microsoft Word and that is all we need.
Our site is www.sobraon.com We have even been able to make a little side money selling Pirate and Rhum T-shirts from it.

As you can tell we like Talkspot. It is so much more than just a blog site. The program was written so that any one can use it ..

OpenCPN and forums and not being a computer illiterate is all very different from designing html pages. My estimate is that less than 1% of the CF members can design a decent html page. I'm not in that 1% so I use the frameworks provided by my blog-host so that I can concentrate on the content instead of design and html code etc.

ciao!

Re: Recommended Web Hosts

I, too, am looking for a web host. On the recommendation of earlier replies i took look at talkspot.com. Previously I looked at web hosts that serve users of wordpress. From what i saw neither talkspot nor the wordpress hosts suit my pruposes. The problem that i see with both approaches is that I am confined by their templates, widgets and tedious pointing and clicking to assemble a page on the site.

In the past I have programmed from scratch in html, and used both FrontPage and Dreamweaver. I like the flexibility of working this way since I can edit and create pages on my PC/notebook and then just ftp them to the service provider that i have been using.

So, do you know of web site hosts that will allow me to just ftp content to my domain on their server?

Thanks in advance.
