Recommended Lubricants

While having a hunt to see if I could use some gear oil I have here instead of Mercury's own Mercury/Quicksilver Gear Lube brand in my outboard I came across a lubricant selection tool on Mobil's NZ web site at Mobil New Zealand Main Menu.

Covers marine engines including outboards and better than that it said the oil I have already is fine .

Might be useful if not already known about. I assume that Mobil's other country web sites will have their own version of the same tool (as their branding varies between countries). Other oil companies may have the same - I just went to Mobil's site first as I generally use their lubricants.

I feel even happier reading that as the Mobil recommendation was also for their synthetic gear oil and that of the same viscocity as the Amsoil one you mention. Is convenient for me as my main engine gearbox also uses the same oil.

I am a big user of Amsoil. But in saying that, I would suggest any synthetic would be a touch above the best of the Dino oil's.
