Perhaps it's easier just to avoid these places. There are plenty of other places to cruise where you don't have to worry about safety.

alas not possible to avoid, hte caribbean is top and to avoid/escape hurricanne a seasonal south cruise is mandatory from august to november...

Yes, most Caribbean nations have no problems with flame throwers aboard. Please do a search before posting, we've had a lot of threads about this.

That appears to be a CWIS or similar, it’s not a chain gun, it actually an 1800’s design, a gatling, electrically driven, and likely those boats are at a greater range than you may suppose. Much higher rate of fire than a chain gun, and can fire many more rounds than a chain gun before overheating as it has multiple barrels, often 6.
Also it’s very likely that a CWIS if that is what this is, is an area weapon system. Meaning that if it puts every round in precisely the same place, it doesn’t meet requirements, they are looking for more of a shotgun effect out of an area weapon.

I’m not a Navy guy, but think a CWIS is a 20mm cannon, and this gun appears to be a 50 cal.

A “Chain gun” is a single barrel gun often a cannon that it’s working mechanism is actually driven by a chain, making it smaller and lighter, it’s surprisingly a Hughes Aircraft design.

Easy, smart solution, don't go to Venezuela.

Hard, dumb solution, buy guns, flamme [sic] throwers and other worthless items for self defense.

Why dumb? Because the range of the flame thrower is very limited. So the pirates just park about 100' away and kill everyone on the boat with their AK47s. Then they come aboard to rape and rob you (assuming they're necrophiliacs

Guns etc. on boats aren't really practical or effective. Their main function is to make the boat owners feel they are protected. I don't care if people want to have guns on their boats, but a flame thrower? That's just serious paranoid thinking.

Going to be a big issue the first time someone touches some fishing boat that was just trying to trade/sell some fish with you.

Hey, I think it's a grand idea!

I think that it's a grander idea to avoid Trinidad if you're concerned about crime on the way down. Why not just go to Panama or Colombia for the hurricane season? Yes, it's a beat to get back to the E. Caribbean, but Cartagena or the San Blas are a much nicer place to spend several months than Trinidad. Just my view.

I know... use the boom or a whisker pole as an innocent looking barrel/nozzle. How about a drone to drop DIY thermite/napalm bombs on the pirate skiff? Use the kind that is controlled from an Android phone, and uploads live video to the cloud in real time. The 21st century answer to Greek Fire and the catapult. Or set up the dinghy for remote control and fill it with Acme's top of the line bombs and guide it to a collision with the pirate vessel. Wile E. Coyote would approve, I am sure. Or have it tow a bunch of floating polypro rope around the pirates, to foul their props, and sink the disabled vessels with a DIY battering ram mounted on the bow. Sharks with laser beams is merely a childish prank compared to these devastating anti piracy devices and tactics.
