However speaking as a retired Broadcast and Cable network
executive the folks on La Vag have made a few mistakes.
1. By taking delivery in France they will be retracing their
tracks which will have no tension, Been there, Done that.
2. They should have hired an agent and contacted some of the networks
about moving their show off of YouTube to a network.
Would make their Patroen income look minuscule.
I'd love to shop it around
3. Good for them about the new boat but it destroys the fantasy of
the attainability of the vicarious dream.
100,000 is in the realm, add a zero and most folks
just say forget it, Don't see any way for me to ever get there.
I wish them the best but shows crash and burn all the time even ones
that have been airing for years. I hope their new boat

Riley of Sailing LaVagabonde saved the money to buy the boat from eight years of working in mines and on oil rigs. (They even had to stop a while while he went back to work for a while). He talked about it early on, but said he just got tired of explaining it over and over again.

I'm a big fan of sailing channels and S/V Delos is my favorite, next to Sea Change.


I had to unsubscribe to the LaVagabond channel because it became too commercialized.


And just tonight I had to unsubscribe from the Sailing Doodles channel because it became entirely too much about girls in bikinis. Which is a shame because he is a Texas guy and started his venture at the marina down the road from me. But it was too many bottoms, and not enough bottom jobs.

Amazing that Riley has risen from the mines to a million dollar boat and his partner. Same goes for her to a degree. Hope it all works out for them. Bit of a risk since they depend on their patrons. Will people continue to give money to a couple with a million dollar boat?

I knew the sailboat digs would come...just wasn't sure who would lead the charge. Cats are nicer to live on, there is no doubt. We all know the downside.

I could care less how far they've come or what kind of boat they live on, but there was a definite shift from "this is how we sail, and this is how we fix this", to "look at me, look at me."

They were not "given" a catamaran and they have 1350 patreon subscribers... not 200,000. They have 200,000 people who subscribe to their youtube channel. BIG difference.

Interesting. You have unsubscribed from some of these because of bikinis and commercialization but are a big fan of the worst offender in those two areas- I'm constantly amazed at what people find cool about s/v Delos...care to elaborate?

I have never seen Delos mention or show a "resort" they stayed at, but I have seen Vagabond do such. Delos instead chooses to meet fans like they did in CoCos Keeling. Vagabond stayed at some tiki hut resort on the water and it was so blatantly paid advertising for the establishment that it was a joke of an episode.

And while Delos may have half nude people in their crew, I've never seen them stop the camera and perversely state they were doing so just to look at the girls in bikinis... as Sailing Doodles did in one of his most recent episodes - I don't even think he had the action of scraping in the shot, choosing to instead focus on their rears.

Both of these were just *MY* lines in the sand.... yours may be drawn elsewhere.

I find that firstly he really knows what he's doing in terms of seamanship. He's need to in the region he sails. Second and perhaps most importantly he appears motivated to inspire other people to get out of their comfort zone and go sailing. His videos are almost an antidote for a lot of the "Instagram generation" of self absorbed narcissistic commercialism that is pretty off putting after a while in my humble opinion. He inspires me anyway- and the video quality is pretty good too. [emoji1303]⛵️⚓️

Unfortunately, like any continuing show or series, all of these vlogs have a tendency to "jump the shark" sooner or later.

I often go back and rewatch earlier episodes of Sailing La Vagabonde, for instance, because I find them more entertaining than the more recent ones. The ones before SLV had to take their first break, are the best IMHO.

Most of these sailing/cruising vlogs go through a predictable arc. It's only the time it takes for that to happen, that varies from vlog to vlog.

I also enjoy his videos the most. Not many of them and he is not a liveaboard. No ********, just sailing!

Thought I detected some friction in the last Vagabond show that I viewed. She complained that he took 90% of the sailboats bed. He noted that even the spacious new closets may not have enough room for all of her clothes and shoes. At the end, Riley grabbed a guy and danced with him for quite awhile, that was the end of the show. Bit odd.

I would almost bet that they made a big mistake. Success ruins a lot of relationships.

I liked Resolute. Baby blue and Monday never where good but they went back to land. Ran sailing they seem a nice couple but he's not poor !

None of these people were rich, they all bought a second hand boat, some with a loan, some with their life savings, some by selling everything they owned. What is so different from us? the fact that they are not middle aged? the fact that they decided that they wanted something else from life and made sacrifices and took risks to do so?

the fact that they are making money of the video's, how is that different from writing articles for magazines or writing books?

Have you considered how long it takes to actually create the video's? it's a fulltime job.

to be honest, what I've read in this thread are a lot of grumpy old sailors that might be jealous that these young people are doing what you couldn't do at their age.

If you watch those videos you will notice that all of them share one thing; their love of sailing, love being on the sea and their love for adventure. How is that different from other sailors/cruisers?
