What is Everyone Doing?

What is everyone doing for income while living on the ocean? I am too young to not have some sort of money coming in to support my travels. Not to pry but any advice would be appreciated. Also I want to live alone or at least with my girl so I don't want to be part of a crew or anything like that. I want to be on my own boat making money while sailing the seas. Thanks.

I Think if one wants to work bad enough you will find a way - just get out there and beat the bushes and see what you find, there are a lot of odd jobs people will give you while you travel-

Im not a bum. I have a good job but managing a factory is hard to do from the middle of the ocean. I'm about as bald as they come and I'm not sure how a dirty hippie can afford a two million boat but more power to him if he can. Who wastes time with a response like that. When you get a real life ill get that hair cut. The only thing more ignorant than that is me responding to it.

Now then.......I just was wondering. Not everyone on the ocean is a retired millionaire or young and born into money. If i do this i wanna do it full time so there has to be income. Computers? Photography? How about a private charter every once in awhile? Just one couple or so. I love scuba diving, maybe something with that.

Ya better have a trade that is needed everywhere, and pays well !! believe me it's tough even for folks with good trades, like myself and my wife !! We were able to do it in years gone past ! would hate do depend on doing it today !!

Locals won't take kindly to a cruiser cutting in on their business. Most countries require a work permit and they are hard to get unless you have some special skill.

Do it how we are doing it. Work hard for 25+ years and then go cruising. No shortcuts here.

I make a living on the ocean......... I catch fish and lobster. Not quite what your looking for, but it pays the bills so I can play on my other boat. You have asked the million dollar question that there is no easy answer.
Do what most do work hard for while then play for a while.....repeat......

OK, being serious for you WantoSail. The Merchant Marine isn't a bad way to go. The most common way is as mentioned above, work hard, save your money, and cruise. The route I took was after cruising, I wanted a job at sea. 4 years at a maritime academy (your young, I did it in my 40's), and your new skills and license will be desperately needed in off shore drilling, generally one month on, one off. I had a couple of colleagues that held the same position and were each other's relief. Both into power yachts so they went in together and bought a mini mega yacht around 100'. Worked out well, as each had it to themselves for their entire time off and one of the perks for working as a marine officer aboard a drill ship (rig) is the company pays your transportation from anyplace in the world.

I'm going to try to offer a reasonable response. You might want to start by considering what your expenses would be. Armed with that number you can at least begin to determine whether your cruising lifestyle is supportable from the sea. There are options. Think about any special knowledge you possess. Could you offer your services as a consultant? Would you have sufficient demand to generate the kind of money needed to support your "number"? Would your job at sea require travel to client sites? If so, how would you accomplish that? Are you good at writing? Could you run an internet business? Spend some time thinking about what talents you have that can be transformed into a 'remote' job. You may come to the conclusion that you're not quite ready to ditch the 9-5.
