Newbies looking for a name for our boat!

TATOOSH ISLAND is an island at the tip of Washington State which I enjoy passing. A light house facility which always has a warm place in my heart. Beautiful, not inhabited except as serviced by the USCG. Marks the western entrance to the straights between Canada and the US. On a clear day the island is stunning. So, my boats name is TATOOSH.
BOGY is another name I have used on one of my sailboats. I am a fan.

A beloved radio host, "Canada's Conscience", sadly now departed, name of Peter Gzowski, had a sabot dinghy. Peter's dad, an émigré, was genuwine Polish nobility. Harking back to the great passenger liners of the Canadian Pacific Steamship Company, such as Empress of Japan Peter called his Sabot Empress of Poland :-)

E-of-J was built in Barrow in Furness in 1890. Her figurehead still graces Vancouver's famous Stanley Park.

A friend of mine that I "helped" to teach to sail many years ago bought a Fast Passage 39 straight outta Jespersen's yard. My friend had retired after selling his business in Twanna. He was a church organist, and a good one, so I suggested "Nunc Dimittis" but that didn't find favour. Maybe he didn't take it literally enuff.

Then there are all the names recalling the Glory Days of the RN. All the "-able" names: "Despicable", "Abominable", "Detestable", "Insufferable" and so on. And all the -ous names: "Vainglorious", "Calamitous", "Villainous", "Injudicious" and so on.

Or you can turn all nostalgic and call the vessel after a place or a piece of water you particularly loved as a child, in my case "Fyn" or "Lillebelt", In my beloved's case "Cates Park" or "Deep Cove"

Then there are all the old standbys: "Stella Maris", "Hope", "Two Friends", "Forward", "Trial".

Naming a vessel is only difficult because the candidates are so many :-)

Years ago when the Columbia 26 II and I were both young I taught many a university student the basics in one of them. Loved it! Excellent, excellent first cruising boat, so congratulations on your choice :-)!

From this side of this 'ere colony, from near Victoria: Whiffin Spit. "Whiffin" has now entered the language as a euphemistic profanity as in: "It's blowin' a whiffin gale!"

I'm one of those guys who believes a boat name must have relevance, eg: something personal or meaningful. But that's just me. Wander the docks of any Marina and you'll find many who believe humor is equally of importance (to them).
If you want to register (as opposed to licence) your boat in Canada, you cannot use the same name as another boat. That is why the government agency requires you to provide an original name choice, plus two alternative names. If you like the name you choose so much, you can always make the alternatives (chosen) Name I, or (chosen) Name II.
As for me, my darlin' wife is from Ballymagroarty, Ireland and so I named my boat Macushla which is Irish Gaelic for "My Darling, My Sweetie" or similar words of endearment. It was accepted on first request meaning it is unique to my boat.
If you cannot come up with something meaningful to the two of you, try researching names of racehorses. That should give you lots of choices to consider. Don't try to be a 'smart-ass" with the name. As some have already said, think what it will sound like when used over radio . . . especially if you are calling in a 'MAYDAY'. You don't want the coastguard radio operator asking numerous times: repeat please? . . . As in most cases, keep it simple and you should do alright.

And whatever name you choose, make sure you know how to spell it. Out last week and happened to notice (I think I was a proofreader in a previous life) that the boat we rented and another in the yard both had different spellings bow and stern. (The one in the yard was named Lady M..., suggesting it was named after the owner's wife. That he wasn't able to spell it correctly may suggest why it's for sale )
