Re: Best kind of Jet Ski

Jet skis are the Harleys of the sea. Loud, fast, annoying; but honestly, most of their drivers are pretty courteous, in these parts anyway, and they ARE a lot of fun. If you haven't driven one, try it! Thank goodness we don't share anchorages with them

I am always amazed by the ability of folks to find things or people to hate on...... Now it's folks with the wrong kind of boat.

Responsibly and safely driven, and with consideration of the enjoyment of other boaters and assets, they are safe, and fun.
Unfortunately, wizz, the above behavior is frequently missing. I can imagine that they are indeed fun, but the irresponsible and unsafe and inconsiderate behavior that is reality in many venues has added me to the "hater" mob.

If that wonderful behavior that you describe was prevalent, there would not be so many places that have banned them.

Sad, but true...

Not here.

It is bad behavior that I despise. It just happens the group of ill behaved people we are discussing are driving the same kind of boat.

Hells Angels on water eh? Good comparison.

Anchorages are tough. The sleeping quarters are rather tight.

I'm thinking they're more like snow mobiles (snow machines) of the sea but I digress.

On the subject of fun, I know it's a my bad should burn in hell for this but went for a ride on a cigarette boat doing +60 knots and it was fun as #%*!. Seriously. We were on our way out to the narrows in New York Harbor passing cars on the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn and I was laughing my ass off the whole way!

Gonna go stand in a corner now and repent....

60 knots is probably more fun on a Jet Ski.
Kinda like flying.

Sorry Dave, do not think that qualifies for the Darwin regatta. Always thought the Queenslanders used beer cans to construct things until I learnt the Territorians are even more inventive !

We even have the Police using them now in Pittwater, plastic jet ski that is, not a beer can one. It is the best way to catch the horns who misbehave, so I can appreciate there is a valid use for them in lifesaving and policing.

Re: Best kind of Jet Ski

I do not like governments interfering in lifestyle politics but I have to say since the government banned jet skis in Sydney Harbour it has made for a significant improvement for all other water sports, particularly for sailboat racing. In all other waterways apart from the Harbour the law currently requires jet skiers keep 200 metres from shore until they beach up. At that point they have to approach perpendicular to the shore line. HOWEVER the majority still scream across the beach in contravention of that law.
Now I have ridden jet ski's in the past and like stink boats I find they are dead boring - and I do like adventure, but jet skiing is not adventure - its just plain boring IMNSHO
