Hi Everyone

Thanks for the great responses. My usuals are Never Dull and colonite, but I was wondering if there was something better out there. I had not thought of Bartenders friend, you do see that a lot at hardware stores. Thanks for the tip about rinsing.

Miracle Cloth sounds terrific and I think I will give that a try. It got good reviews, but very glad someone here has experience with it.

And I do think I will be following up with a wax covering....or WD40? How long does WD40 last on metal (if reapplied after a sailing trip)?

WD 40 is water soluble, it will leave a fine residue for a little while, then be gone. After you wash down with soap and water.

Thanks....it is suppose to be water displacing (thus the "WD"), but I can imagine it would not stick around long. So, wax it is. Thanks.

Barkeepers Friend is good for fiberglass, teak, or stainless. Rinsing it off is the key. It drips down the side of the hull if you don't and leaves tracks. A cheap product called Wink will clean stainless with less mess (it's liquid). Follow up with a good wax and it will last longer.

For brass inside the boat polish with whatever you like and then spray 2 - 3 coats of laquer and forget about it for a long time. Use acetone to remove it and start over. I just did brass today. Bronze it better left green - it likes it.

Seriously, this is one of the very few products in this world that lives up to its name.

We last did the stainless last September, with Miracle Cloth. We did it again last weekend - but it really did need it. We needed to do it again about 2 months ago. In other words, every 6 months. We have a 47 foot boat with TONS of stainless. My wife and I did the whole thing in about 3 hours. If I keep up with it, it should be about 1/2 that time.

Here's a tip: Do the based first. The cloth gets black with use, and if you do anything that has fiberglass around it, you'll want to do it before the cloth turns black.

I'll have to try that.
What I use is just brasso. Its cheap, it works.
I need to follow up with some wax but never seem to....
so much to do, not enough time.

As I work for a marine maintenance co. our main jobs are polishing boats and doing the stainless etc etc.
The cleaner we use I will find out the name tomorrow BUT I do know the main thing we use that no-one else uses is the 3M pads they come in pad about 3x4 inches and we cut them up in about 1 inch strips they are a honeycomb plastic and they are the best thing since sliced bread for cleaning the rust marks off stainless.
a lot of people around the marina always ask what we us etc clean the stainless,, I am told never to tell the opposition what we use ,,,BUT it works

Hi Everyone

Thank you for the great info. I got Miracle cloth and used it with excellent results. One cloth does get black pretty fast and did not do but perhaps 1/3rd of the boat. I will get another, but will also try a liquid or paste metal polish. Miracle cloth seemed to need the least elbow grease (...there is only one of me here

).

I could not find Prism, so thinking of trying 3M metal polish ($27) or Colonite ($19). Still have some Never Dull around...somewhere. Mmmm...probably go with 3M metal polish.

Any other suggestions welcome.

ps - anyone remember the astronaut who said, "Guys, there is only one of me up here"? I think it was way way back on an early Hubble repair mission or ISS construction, while being 'managed' by two different ground controllers. Anyway...just a bit of trivia...and one of my all time favorite lines.

You can keep using the Miracle Cloth well beyond the "black" stage.

Yep...keep using the Miracle Cloth till it falls apart. One cloth is good for MANY uses.
