I recently started using WD-40. Its cheap as dirt and seems to work better and with much more ease than any other product. I am at the point where I use wd-40 first for anything, and it always seems to work!

I second wink or other oxalic acid cleaners. Simply brush on with small paintbrush then rinse well after rust disappears. Way less effort involved. Also works great on those rust deposits that form on hull above waterline.

My favorite for stainless steel is "Wichinox". Its a paste that contains a small amount of phosphoric acid that repassivates the stainless steel to prevent any rusting or pitting. It isn't the cheapest trick on the market...but it works very well.
