Re: Refitting a Compass 47

There are a lot more varnish pictures on my other computer. I will post them up later. We also decided to pull the deck hardware, fair, re-gel coat the deck, re kiwi grip the deck and then rebed. We discovered that 90% of our deck is solid glass with an abundance of stringers. The nice thing about using gelcoat over paint is that I can do small sections at a time, but the sanding is brutal.

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

The reason I decided to redo the decks was that it just did not look good enough. I thought I could live with the old gelcoat, but I guess I am too much of a nut to let it be. The work is rough. We have about 4 months into the deck and are nearly done with 40% of it. I figure it will be another 6 months until we are finished. In my opinion it looks pretty good. It is not perfect but a huge improvement. We have to reinstall the deck hardware/ toe rail on the starboard side and then we can move on to the other side.

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

Also the motor is on the bed, but we need to have the engine bed modified to fit the saildrive. We have a great glass guy who will be starting on this in the next few weeks and we are hoping to be splashed towards the end of December or early January. Denise also was in email contact with an individual who worked for the company that built the boat. He actually helped out in the building process. He was also kind enough to send us a few pictures. Talk about the luckiest find in the world. Denise rules at the internet.

yup, as if we don't have enough work in front of us, as soon as we splash, I will have to worry about keeping the white bottom white and not green/yellow/brown.

For Compass,
Where in Florida are you getting the bottom painted? We need some work done and are new to Florida so looking for recommendations. We need through hulls replaced, bottom painted, etc. Playboy is closed and Crackerboy has a wait list.
Thanks,

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

I made an offer on a Compass 47 in Lauderdale in the early 80s. Its name was Supertramp. I wonder if yours might be the same boat. I loved it ,but they didnt accept my offer. It was the same story as most of the Compass,s, it was owned by a dentist that wanted to get his money out of South Africa. I went on to buy a Peterson 44 in Antigua and had many years of sailing out of her._____Grant.

Nice! From what I could figure out a Ft Lauderdale doctor bought 2 of these and sold one to our boat's previous owner, who I believe worked for the US Govt. I guess four were built by our builder and one was run down by a ship in a terrible accident. I guess there should be 2 other compass 47s from Kearley Marine somewhere.

Well I have been busy with work and school, but we are still making decent progress. Our glass guy has done a great job on installing a bed for our saildrive.

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

We got the motor and saildrive bolted on the bed and spent about 10 hours cleaning the inside of the boat. I was worried about the prop fitting and it looks like it fits just fine. The next few days I have off and will spend my time barrier coating and antifouling the saildrive, antifouling the the prop, and installing the rubber fairing boot. We still have to finish the electrical, fuel, and water aspects of the repower, but that should be pretty easy.

My manual says stay away from metallic antifouling, so I am trying to stay away from it. Looking at Sea Hawk Smart Solution / Ultimate Eco / Vivid Free. I am not keen on saildrives and am worried about corrosion. Anyone out there have experience with these paints?
