Re: Refitting a Compass 47

It is a requirement at the yard that they do the bottom jobs. In my youth I might have complained, but as I get older I look at this type of situation to be a blessing. The yard has been great about letting us do just about everything else ourselves. They also know that we have a lot of projects to do and they are putting every boat that comes in for work in front of our bottom job, basically giving us a lot of time to finish our stuff. This has enabled us to tackle this portion of the project with very little stress and hurry. My question to the people who are following this is:

What color should we paint the bottom?

We are 99% set on mixing white and black to get a very light gray. I have always dreamed of a white bottom, but fear the potential yellow/green/orange waterline.

CPA, what bottom paint will you be using? I am interested in getting info from people in high growth areas.

I think we are going to be using Petit Vivid. I have never used it, but I hear it works well. I don't put a ton of faith in any bottom paint, so I am a once a month bottom cleaning kind of guy,

Thanks for the pictures! She looks like a gem. What type of power do you have? How is the 2 blade max prop working out?

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

Today we sanded the bilge and laid down some primer. We also installed the newly painted battery box into the newly painted locker in the 3rd stateroom and installed the batteries. I hooked up tone battery to see what worked. I was surprised to find that the vhf, stereo, and the majority of the interior lights worked. also the antique Furuno echo sounder worked. Will get some picture up in a day or two.

Hi, she has a Perkins 4154, plus a Yanmar 3kw gene.
With the 2 blade max prop we reach a max of 6,5 knots. but under sail, it's working fine.

did you see the blog on Get Jealous?

I am starting to feel the same way. Every time I start on a new project and get up close and personal with the construction of this boat, It gives me a lot of motivation. Nice to see that you have a sail drive too.

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

Things have slowed down a bit, as we are waiting to get the steering quadrant repaired. The quadrant is bronze and the key way is a bit worn. We also took our 2 bent stanchions along to the welder and are having them fixed. Besides that, we are painting a new section of the bilge, we installed the speed transducer (which netted a nice core sample!), cleaned up the prop, are getting the steering cables and pedestal system redone and also having fun. We keep forgetting the camera. No pictures this time.

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

OK folks, it has been a long time since our last update, but we have been busy with the work. I have a job and that is slowing down the progress. But in a nutshell:

We have finished the fairing and the bottom paint is done. here are the pictures.

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

We are finished with the varnish in all but the aft stateroom and aft head. We also pulled the generator and sold it.
