Re: Refitting a Compass 47
Well it has been a busy weekend. We have had the G&S listed and an interested party offered us a Wylie Wabbit and a Lindenberg 22 in trade. We looked at the boats and did the deal. So now we have two boats in much better shape for sale. I just hope they don't sell before we can go sailing on them.
Also today we went by the marina/boatyard and took a look at the Beta that just showed up. We did not want to open the boxes completely until we are ready to install. So I guess now we have more stuff to sell and a bottom and motor/saildrive install ahead of us!!
G&S leaving in the first picture.

We have our work cut out for us with this next step, huh!?!? At least she'll be getting a bottom job while we're installing the motor. She's got a science experiment growing down there as it sits.

Re: Refitting a Compass 47
Work has slowed down a bit. I blew my back out and I was down for 8-9 days . We just finished the nonskid yesterday. We have a couple areas to touch up but for the most part it looks good. We are nearly done varnishing the fwd stateroom and head. We should be done in 3-4 days. We also should be hauling out in a few weeks and installing the Beta and saildrive.

Re: Refitting a Compass 47
You aren't the only ones doing the Beta switch. I just hoisted mine up into the cockpit so I can use an A-frame for doing the install instead of a fork lift. I lose access for the forklift by the end of the week. I have it parked across the cockpit seats so if I build an A-frame at the frotn of the cockpit I can swing it back to pick up the engine and shift it forward so the engine will drop down and under the cabin wall. Should be fun, but not for a few weeks yet. I still have to rip out the old bearers, shaft log and prop struts, then fab up the new pieces and align them before welding them in place.

Re: Refitting a Compass 47
We hauled out the Compass today. Now the real fun begins. We also discovered new water and Diesel tanks in the bilge areas. The plans call for one 300 liter fuel tank in the bilge/keel. I wonder how large these tanks are? They have huge inspection ports, so eventually we will find out. We are also having a hard time deciding on the bottom paint color. I am leaning towards white, though I know what a pain it is to keep clean. Other suggestions are black, and, believe it or not, brown. What do you guys think?

Re: Refitting a Compass 47
Good morning,
I'm the Owner of a Compass 50, built in Cape Town in 1988 by Gulf. I bought her 6 years ago and sail from Cape Town to Med.
I'm currently working as Megayacht Captain and during this time, i put her on dry dock.
Next year, we will start a big refit in order to enjoy sailing with her again.
The Compass 50, was originally a 47 CC, with an extended lazarette.
I was in contact with Angelo Lavranos, and i got all drawings.
I'm open to received any suggestion or remarks.
Please feel free to contact me.
Eric

Eeek. How long did you say it had been since the last haulout?

Heh heh ... exactly. It's like a PSA for bottom cleaning.
From what we can gather it had been at least five years since it had been hauled and cleaned. For some reason the broker who was dealing with the estate we purchased it from had it hauled this past May, but they just pulled it out, made sure there were no obvious, unintentional holes, and put it right back.
I have quite a few pictures on my blog, but real life keeps me from updating as much as I should.

Re: Refitting a Compass 47
It has been a while since we have updated. We are still out of the water and having fun. We have the engine bed and surrounding area sanded and painted. We have glassed up a thru-hull and a few miscellaneous bolt holes below the waterline, and did some minor glass work and fairing around the saildrive hole. We also pulled the 4 batteries the boat cam with, which looked like they came out of 4 different auto part stores in 1989, and pulled the battery box out and washed and painted it. I have also cleaned the Max Prop and need to order the grease for it. We have drained both bilge fuel tanks, and spent 3 days cleaning them out. I was a bit disappointed to find that the capacity is only 58 gallons between the two. Hey, I know this is great, but I was hoping for a bit more. We still have 106 gallons of fuel in the saddle tanks. We are now in the process of cleaning and sanding a part of the bilge area and hope to throw some primer on tomorrow. I also took a few days and did some waterline and transom acid washing, wet sanding, compounding, and waxing. We finally took off the transom mounted outboard bracket. It came out pretty nicely. I also have a new speed transducer for the B&G system, and an ST40 depth sounder and 3 of the 5 group 31 deep cycle batteries we need.
This week coming up will most likely consist of:
Finishing this section of the bilge paint.
Installing the Depth and Speed transducer.
Installing the saildrive.
Installing the West Marine 31 deep cycle batteries.
