Memory Foam Thickness & Alternatives

We recently bought a couple of these for camping, but love them so much we're going to take them to the boat.

REI Camp Bed 3.5 Self-Inflating Pad - Regular at REI.com

3.5" self-inflating high density foam, very light, very tough, very comfortable. Put on top of a couple of inches of regular foam and I'm thinking they will be great. Easy and compact to stow, too.

We put a 2" memeory foam topper on top of a 6" hard foam mattress. It's pretty good but 3" would have been better. I talked to a guy in Florida that makes custom mattress' and he said that he uses three layers of foam of increasing density.

Normally a memory foam matress is not all memory foam. Top is and the bottom part is "other". It will squish down to no padding if only memory foam evidently. I just bought a California King size topper 2.5" thick for $189. (costco) That's about a good a price as Ive seen...

We just got a 4 inch mattress, 1 1/2 inches of memory foam on 2 1/2 inches of firm foam.

The king size was a serta for 110.00 from overstock.com

It cuts easily to fit the v-berth and is wonderful for sleeping. We have had a memory foam mattress at home for years and always liked it.

I plan on ordering another one when we do the cabin cushions to cut into the settee seats.

Did you just cut with a knife? I saw those at Overstock, but unfortunately their King was not as big as other kings (?) I needed every inch to fit my V berth. Great Deal!

We pieced it a bit. Took a corner that was cut off to fill in the foot. You can glue the pieces of foam with a spray adhesive made for foam. Butted up the factory flat edges to each other. It worked great.

I cut it with a serrated knife. The one I used was one of those old electric carving knives. goes thru it like butter. I made the cover from older cotton sheets.

Compared to $700+ TO ORDER A MEMORY FOAM MATTERESS FROM FOAMORDER (WHOOPS sorry cap lock ; -) the $110 was a deal and worth the time to cut it and cover it. The sheets I had so no cost for the cover except the long zipper which was maybe 7 bucks...

Yea latex is great also. I need to buy an electric knife... that's whyt I asked about how Sarafina cut it... I've heard the electric works great...

I am looking as well as the PO put in a regular matteress on the boat, it got wet when it sunk plus a inner spring matteress is hard to move, and of course there is storage under.These are the two companies I have looked at. The first has good pricing, the second has a unique system that I like. You can have firm on one side and softer on the other side to suit each of you. The cover comes off the wash. It is natural latex. I believe it is what we will go with, but still thinking about it.

I cut our 3" with a sharp kitchen knife, just keep the cut spread open so the knife doesn't drag.
