Memory Foam Mattress - Too Hot?

We're cruising +/- 20 degrees lat and were wondering whether a memory foam mattress (tempur-pedic) retained too much body heat to be comfortable in a warm climate.

We have a 2 inch thick memory foam pad on top of our mattress. The pad is enclosed in a plastic-like casing. We just use a regular cotton mattress cover/pad on top of that. It's comfortable for us in SW Florida (25 deg N).

I would imagine that a cotton cover / pad atop a tempur-pedic foam mattress would be just fine.

We've been living at Latitude 17.2* N for about three years, sleeping on a 12' thick memory foam mattress, and find it to be very comfortable from a temperature perspective, along with being very easy on the spine. We don't use air conditioning.

We also have a 3" memory foam topper on our bunk in the boat, and it's been equally comfortable--in the tropics and the Chesapeake.

If you find it's too hot, switch to lighter bed covers - that's what worked for me.

12 feet thick!!! Can you still feel a pea under it?

We also have a memory foam mattress and have no heat problem in the Bahamas and US east coast.

Good catch, colemj. I should have said 0.3048 meters thick.

Ditto - 3" memory foam on our berth and it works great. In retrospect, though, I'd probably put a denser foam on the bottom and go with a 2" thick layer of memory foam. My wife's back has been acting up lately.

We have a new one on our boat - and love it. We've had one at home for years. BUT, they ARE a little warmer than a traditional mattress. Not a lot, but a little.

I have used egg crate foam on top of memory foam and it worked well...I tend to find using the type of blankets used in most hospitals are great to help keep cool.

Update on Memory Foam

Thank you all for your contributions.

We took the plunge and now have a 6" memory foam mattress aboard New Morning and love it. I do get hot on it (although hormones are at play) so I added a wool topper from 'earthsake' that provides a nice transition.
