Have you tried measuring the shaft diameter, for the inner seal lip diameter then turning mounting plates inner surface to press in a new seal.?
They'll make that new seal, until they don't.!

Use an O ring instead of the now broken spring. Soak/clean the old seal in transmission stop leak. It will soften the old seal.

Fairly decent idea... I would use it as a temp stop-gap solution if I needed to get from A to B... But... He's got the end exposed and won't have better resources than right now to do it right...

Re: Westerbeke 46 rear seal

Zboss...

I need a few critical dimensions to see if I can get somebody to do this...

1. shaft dia
2. max plate dia
3. distance, mounting hole to opposite side hole

Is a couple hundred ($200) OK? Hoping for much less...

Re: Westerbeke 46 rear seal

We are in St. Augustine...

I'll try and get those dimensions. Unfortunately, the way the engine sits in the bilge area, its very very hard to get accurate dimensions. It was bad enough removing the bolts for the seal! I'd have to find a manual with the dimensions.

Its not just a plate BTW... the metal part is an L flange with the seal glued to the rim of the flange and inside. I have no doubt that a machinist could make the part. We already went down that route with a place that specializes in difficult to find seals. The issue is the seal lip and the rubber part being glued to the rubber seal. Whatever they used, it is fused to the metal.

The old seal is actually worn away on one side... you can see how it has been rubbed away. Would this be an indication of an alignment issue?

Anyhow... different problem.

If you are looking for a local machine shop, I might suggest the place at the entrance to Green Cove Springs marina. I had some work done there and the price was fair.

Re: Westerbeke 46 rear seal

I posted a picture of the seal back in post #26.

The issue is not the metalic portion, its the rubber seal which is adhered to both the flat rim that faces the engine and the inside rim.

I have a couple of good leads from HappyMDSailor so I am going to explore that option, I'm also not giving up on WB, and I may have found the original seal manufacturer.

BH Seals Ltd (B'ham) - Oil Seal Manufacturer

I'm learning a lot more about oil seals than I ever cared to. Apparently the first two letters of a seal type represent the manufacturer and the ones that follow it represent the dimensions and then the lip type.

However BH 2417 E doesn't make sense to me if that is the dimensions... I assume its a metric seal.

Z... If it's what I think it is... I don't think you can remove the seal from the metal housing without destroying the housing ... ???

It would be GREAT if BH could lead you to a vendor with one on a dusty shelf somewhere

Uh-yep metric = shaft-bore-width... i.e. my ruddershaft seal is 851007

We'll gett'r dun one way or another!

Re: Westerbeke 46 rear seal

With the seal wearing on one side, the alignment must have been off. Either the wear on the bolt shoulder is severe or they have been replaced by non-specification bolts, as I see no alignment pin holes.

Re: Westerbeke 46 rear seal

Is the Mitsubishi p/n you came up with 30607-22703? A place called HGM lift parts apparently has one in stock for 175.24. They're located here:

CT30607-22703::SEAL - OIL (CAT (CATERPILLAR / TOWMOTOR): FORKLIFT PARTS)

If that's not the number you have, I got it out of the parts manual here:

http://home.kpn.nl/verzameling/samof...anual4dq50.pdf

The catalog drawing looks just like the one in your picture. Failing that, I'd call B/h first thing tomorrow morning and give them the BH4217E number. I wouldn't be surprised if they had it on the shelf.

Re: Westerbeke 46 rear seal

Are you 100% sure the seal is "bonded" to the metal ring? I did a 44B-Four, a Mitsubishi SL42, and the seal pressed into the aluminum flange..

Yes, that was the part number I identified and I had sent to me... the ID was about 1/4" to large.

That's a very interesting question because the picture in the parts catalog shows three parts.

I have attached a screen clip of the parts diagram. Part #6 is the assembly I am speaking about.

It shows a retaining ring (part #5), which we have and is fine.

Part #6 is sold as an assembly. On my part, the metal retaining ring looks welded to the disc that you see on the L shaped retainer. The retainer has what appears to be rubber gasket on the edge as well as what you would think of as a standard seal on the inner portion.

I have not looked carefully to be assured that they are NOT two different parts... when I saw this image it confused me and I assumed that it was in error. Maybe not. I will check closely tomorrow.
