Re: Volvo penta dimensions

You might find that its not so easy to tell these three engines apart as the dimensions are very similar. Here is a little info that may help:

MD6- 10 h.p. @2400 RPM
dimensions when fitted with "MS" gear box
overall length- 713 mm
overall height- 573 mm
Bosch fuel injection pump
usually fitted with Dynastart (combination starter/generator)

MD7A 13 h.p.@2500 RPM
dimensions when fitted with "MS" gearbox
overall length- 718mm
overall height- 573mm
Bosch or CAV injection pump
Fitted with starter and alternator

MD7B 17 h.p. @3000 RPM
dimensions when fitted with "MS2A" gearbox
overall length - 737mm
overall height- 360 mm
Bosch injection pump
fitted with starter and alternator
fitted with MS2 transmission

All widths were the same.....

If you have specific questions I can try to help, or fotos are helpful....

Re: Volvo penta dimensions

Doug, I am a bit confused about the height listed for the MD7A vs the MD7B. I have never seen an MD7B, but I thought they were almost just a 7A with the RPM turned up? I had thought it would be a simple drop in replacement for my MD7A. Just curious! ____Grant.

Re: Volvo penta dimensions

NZYOTTI, I just had another thought. I used to own an MD7A and I bought an MD6B for spare parts. From the outside, the only difference I could see was the thermostat housing on the front of the exhaust manifold. They were a different shape from each other and one was cast iron and one was bronze. If you post photos for Doug, take one of the front of the exhaust manifold. It might help. ____Grant.

Re: Volvo penta dimensions

Opps!......typo on my part......All three have the same height, 573mm. The 360mm dimension is the width of the engine mount centerlines.

One thing that you may need to be aware of is that the MD7B was equipped with the MS2 transmission and it was a drop center, 8 degree down angle gear, while the MD7A used the MS gear which was a straight out gear. This means that the transmission output flange will not match up to the prop shaft without some engine bed work. Its probably possible to fit the old gear to the new engine with a bit of parts swapping......I would have to check the parts book to confirm that.
