Series Drogue Cone Dimensions

I'm wanting to start using scap canvas pieces to put together a series drogue. I use predominantly topgun and it would seem to be heavier than what's usually used but rescued from trash. I found number of cones, spacing, line length and diameters etc on my searches. Nobody mentioned the dimensions of the cones. I saw someone on ebay selling individuals that were 5" big end 1" small end. Is this standard? If anyone has purchased one complete how much did you give for it. Wouldn't want to put in the cost and effort and find out I could have bought one for less than I have in it. Thanks.

Re: Series Drogue Cone Dimensions

I came across this post because I have the same question. Unfortunately I'm not quite satisfied with the answers. Here's the problem. I made 2 templates, one using the Sailrite dimensions and the other using the pattern from this site https://www.passionsmenu.com/images/...gjordan%20.pdf

Both give a cone with a 5" cone opening, however the Sailrite cone has a 2" opening at the smaller end, while the other is only 1.5". I've found references here and there that the small end should be 1.5", however Sailrite is a pretty trusted source for these kinds of projects.

Now you might say "1/2 inch, no big deal" however that's almost the double the size of the opening and it really shows when you mock up the cones next to each other.

On one hand, I don't want the opening too be too big, thus not slowing down the boat enough. Conversely, if the hole is too small, maybe too much resistance and stress on the individual cones.

Does anyone know what Mr. Jordan himself suggested? Kinda want to fgure this out before I sew 110 cones!

Thanks

BINGO! Thanks, you rock. I looked through the document quickly but missed the answer. Still, curious that Sailrite didn't have the proper measurements.

Re: Series Drogue Cone Dimensions

bigger cones = more distance between the cones

the cone creates a turbulence and the next one is less effective if it is in the turbulent zone

so you can have fewer, bigger cones, but you then want more space between them

I have no idea what you consider that your time is worth. Also, if you ever use the JSD, the reports are that the cones are brutalised - I’m not sure that ones made of canvas will hold together. Anyway, you can buy just the cones from https://www.oceanbrake.com/quote.
