What about performance of other Schionning cats? Many of them seem to be priced quite reasonably. For example, this 2007 Schionning 1620 was for sale in January for $530.000 AUD.

There's a design comparison table on their website that tells you things like bruce number, beam to length ratio etc but, unfortunately, it hasn't been updated for a long time and doesn't include most of the g-force designs or the new arrow designs. It does, however, cover the waterline series which was their performance cat before the g-force was penned. Also the Wilderness series, like Thor.

You could, of course, get them to draw something that you like and either build it yourself or have it built. You could get a very nice, brand new cat for less than you'd pay for a Lagoon of similar length, for example.

I appreciate that not many people want to go down that route, for a number of reasons.

That might be true in the US, but Australia has depth in their catamaran sailor fleets, and I would think that here, someone knowledgeable would jump for one, because of excellent pedigree and known build.

Not only that, but most Schionings are balsa cored, so one would expect a useby date.

It doesn't take much mushy balsa to devalue a boat considerably.

Best to unload sooner than later.

I was all irritated, then realized it was sea slug again...


So long as the deck hardware was properly installed there is no known lifespan of balsa core. There are thousands of boats out there with balsa that are coming close to their 50th birthday and show no signs of stopping yet. It's amazing, if you don't abuse things they tend to last.

My boat is 32 years old and built with balsa, no one mentioned a use by date when I purchased it. Maybe the date is the same for the carbon fibre mast.....I'll have a look in the manual.
