Re: Lagoon 620 at 27.7 knots - have you seen this?

I don't actually believe that the boat did 27.7kn at any point. It is very common to get GPS artifacts with a max instantaneous speed far higher than what was actually achieved. I have logs indicating I went from 18 to 27 back to 18 over .5 seconds for instance. This is why all speed record keeping requires some filtering or max speed over a distance (100 or 500m generally).

instruments are quite error prone, but speed on video over water was around 20 kn.

if there is enough big wave, there is no physical reason not to speed up with cat, more than one wants.

I get scared when speed goes 10 kn.

How many of you would leave the driving to the auto-pilot at over 20 knots?

Wind speed of 20 knots on autopilot is OK, boat speed of 20 knots is very unlikely, but if it happened, yes I would probably need to be on autopilot. I'd be so sh-t scared I'd be on my knees praying! Or needing both hands to hold the rum bottle.

I'd rephrase question - how many of you had sailed at 20+ knots lately?

Going downwind with an over trimmed, reefed headsail and boom can also be seem amidships.

Big deal..
I got pictures of the GPS read-out on my CSY 33 doing 9.5 knots, but in the middle of the Gulf Stream going north. In reality I was motorsailing at a max through the water speed of 6 knots.

You think 9.5 knots is a big deal? I got a GPS max speed of 655 knots once. Now THAT'S moving!

I have had a more realistic max of 24.9 once, the speed log also recorded a max of over 23. Hit 20ish quite a few times. But these are brief surfing speeds. On autopilot too.

Re: Lagoon 620 at 27.7 knots - have you seen this?

The boat is not making 27 kts but it just shows that in a point in time she did this speed, we don't know when and how.. The speed of the boat when filmed is 7-6-7.7 kts. (see the display "velocita" which means speed in italian) We know that L 620 can make up to 6-7 kts with bare poles because of excessive windage. Actually you can see that the furled gib doesn't quite work..

I did with my Orana between Bermuda and Azores under spi 9-10 kts with 30 kts of true, occasionally surfing down the waves at 20 + kts. The max I had was 25,3 kts.

Cheers

Having watched the video, I think my plotter's claimed 655 knot top speed was more accurate than the 27.7 for this Lagoon. Maybe the decimal point was one spot too far to the right?

Pretty funny.

Off a cliff, maybe.

Don't blame me, it's just a video from Internet, no any proof of course

I too have max gps speeds of over 40 knots. One time it happened as I passed a naval base - GPS position changed by 6 miles and then back again soon after on the track....

STW paddle wheel maybe not always well calibrated but it doesnt lie like that.
