if i didnt have my boat, a vagabond 47 or formosa 51--yes they CAN be sailed single handed easily enough with the right autopilot. they have nice wide decks for going forward.... but , since i have my bird, she is it.

Tough one, so many nice ones! I'd probably go for a Norseman 447, one of Bob Perry's designs. Decent tankage, dedicated nav., good accommodations lay-out, decks don't appear too "busy", skeg-hung rudder, nice hull shape, cutter rig, looks like she wouldn't get in her own way. Now, if I could have all of that & a pilothouse....How much spending money do I get to go along with this dream? Enough to cruise eternally?

I think Besteaver 45 would be nearly perfect, I would have her converted to a ketch so that she would be like a Bougainvillaea by Kanter, just smaller.

WHY:

Quality of the design. Quality of the built. Speed. Seaworthiness. Watertight bulkheads. Pilot house. Looks.

Second best: A Bougainvillaea 45, built by K&M. ;-)

37 Tayana, Pacific Seacraft 36, West Sail 32.
I like boats that were made to go to sea and can be prepared for sea with the least amount of work and cash. All these boats need considerable work to get ready for a lot of sea time, but these are the closest to being ready of the production boats, have a sea-kindly motion, are very tough, and are quite safe in blue water. They can easily be rigged for short handed crew and will stand up to a blow. It is also easy to attach a Cape Horn Wind Vane Steering system to them all as well (Very necessary item). Add a Portland Pudgy with the life raft and sail kits and off you go.
To me they look good too. Nice sheer, stout underbody, and all have that nautical look of a well found vessel. To me anyway.
If I had to choose one, it would be the Tayana 37. Especially if I could design the interior (Aft Cabin).
I also like the Hunter 37 Cherubini.
