My first "real" sailboat was a Catalina 22. All fiberglass and no wood. Had it for several years and it was almost "maintenance free".
Had a blast on it and it was easy to sail (single handed) up to about 20 knots....
I think I paid 2,000 for it and 6 years later sold it for 2,800 and it was missing the outboard when I sold it (someone stole it). The trailer was rusted bad when I sold it....The sails still had nice shape to them....and I went out every Sunday for around 6 years.

I thought it was VERY easy to handle. AND I had LOTS of FUN on it!

Re: Suggestions on a beginner sailboat

I may have found a 1973 O'Day 23 in great shape on a trailer for $1200. Has a full sail inventory. All running and standing rigging is only 2 years old. There is no outboard but that's ok since here in South Carolina we require titles on all outboards. A buddy of mine has a 9.9 hp sailmaster outboard with good compression, in non running shape, needs fire, for $300 with title. Needs about $120 at the shop. Now with paperwork, transportation for me to go get it, boat, motor, trailer, running outboard, all S.C. titled, for right at $2000. Not a bad price I think.

Also, I have been out on a Catalina 27 a few times and can handle it in good weather. Need more practice but also have an scheduled ASA 101 class scheduled in Mid-May and they will check your boat and train you on it if you'd like, which I thought is cool. Only $475 if we use my boat.

Opinions?

My first sailboat was an Oday. I have also had a Cat 27. You will outgrow the Oday pretty fast, but its a great first boat. 9.9 hr is too big, will wiegh down the butt and make sailing difficult on the 23. I would get a smaller outboard, (3-5hrsp) and also learn to row it out and in to port.
I used to row my Cat 27, but that is extreme.
Alright, those are my opinions- next!

I thought it might be a bit much. On the other hand, I like to have a power behind me just if the need arises and the motor in this condition in this state with title is a steal. Plus, I'm thinking of the future as I thought I would out grow it fast as well.

Thanks for the info.
