Re: Should I tell the new owner.... OMG are you kidding me!?

Just to keep this discussion a bit clearer -- some folks are responding to Sailor647 as if this is his boat and his ex being discussed. I believe he copied and pasted (in disbelief) the story of an unrelated 3rd party from that Liveaboard Sailboat Facebook page.

Note his final remark after the italicized excerpt:
"I can't even believe this.... What has happened to people?"

You are correct Cormorant and I can't speak for others, I was responding to the situation. I never thought Sailor647 was asking for advice.

But I will say good on ya for pointing it out as others may have missed it.

You dont save money by skipping the survey if the boat cost much over $4k or if it will be taken offshore. Its not about figuring out what the boat is really worth. Its about finding flaws that if not remedied could lead to tragedy.

Yeah, I know that. Guess my emphasis on the word "save" wasn't clear enough.

Re: Should I tell the new owner.... OMG are you kidding me!?

Easy way out of the mess is to just tell buyer to get a real survey out of water & get a highly recommended surveyor, that's honest...for everyone! I bought my boat never speaking to previous owner because it went through a broker, got a good survey, still they can't find everything everytime, but your conscience will be clear even if your motivation is a bit misplaced. I mean you're more worried about your ass than anybody else. But I'm not a Salesman I tend to let everybody know everything that way there's no buyer's remorse because they know everything I do. But that's me. Go with your conscience you're the one that has to sleep at night

I bet even a half-wit surveyor would see the keel crack!

But you are right, it is hard for them to find everything on something as complex as a vessel.

Re: Should I tell the new owner.... OMG are you kidding me!?

Looks like the guy has made the correct decision.

And you are correct, this isn't us. I was merely pointing it out.

**Update - I did text the buyer the photo and let him know of the separation and my concern over the crack leading from the keel bolt. I strongly recommended that he have it inspected by someone qualified to do so.
While this does make me feel better, I cant help but be sick over the way it all goes down. Why should I even have to question if I should tell them. It's a shame that I found myself sitting here in fear of doing the right thing, in hopes that an evil person would ultimately make the choice to pay me what is rightfully mine.
It really is depressing to think that my little ~$10,000 share of this thing had me debating if I should tell the guy. 10k. I'm literally ashamed of myself. **

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. And besides which it is her boat not yours , so you have no worries. That apart it is buyer beware and your ex bought the yacht warts and all. You want rid of her and the yacht so do as she says.

Quote: “...the boat is being sold.... (Her boat)... The ex asks me to help with the sale, but also to hide our purchase survey from the buyer... should I tell the buyer?”

Why complicate things?

The boat, sez Joe Bloggs, is no longer his to worry about or to sell. The ex-wife is asking Joe to do something dishonest. Perhaps the marital break-up was due to the ex-wife having a fundamental psychology that grated on Joe's norms. We don't know, but we might surmise so. It wouldn't be the first such relationship.

If so, Joe's reply to any approach from the ex-wife, about anything at all, should obviously be “Be gone!”. Might even express that in the current vernacular :-)

If a potential buyer of the boat finds him and asks specific questions regarding the condition of the boat, Joe should simply tell the truth. Briefly. As monosyllabically as possible. If I were in his shoes, I'd get the buyer's e-mail addy and reply by e-mail, so as to leave a “paper trail”.

What the ex-missus thinks about it is clearly no longer Joe's concern.

Re: Should I tell the new owner.... OMG are you kidding me!?

Wow, myself in those shoes? I would try to get her to see the light of honesty. If she can't or won't see it, then walk away, unless you've already met with the buyer, then you'll have to follow your own morals. If being honest leads to lawsuit from her, that would be the result of decisions you made long ago....ie...The relationship. If that happens, learn from that relationship, so as not to repeat it. Your Soul and self respect are worth more than anything you could loose in this materialistic Governmental system could take.

Re: Should I tell the new owner.... OMG are you kidding me!?

In a question of moral and ethics you can go back to Kant and his categorical imperative.

In basic it is:

"Do not impose on others what you do not wish for yourself."
"Treat others how you wish to be treated"

Or like Kant put it:
"Act only in accordance with that maxim through which you can at the same time will that it become a universal law."

Which goes a bid further, as you may not look only at yourself and what you may bear but also regard that other beings may need be treated better than you.

Re: Should I tell the new owner.... OMG are you kidding me!?

Many people, especially these days, believe that winning, at any cost, is the most important thing. I was raised differently. I would tell the buyer everything. Maybe that's why I will never be rich. Unfortunately cheaters do prosper.
