Thankyou for the feedback.

Had a really good look at a Moody last week. There is a lot to like.

Funny I just left the Marina after checking out a 425 for sale.. owner wants top dollar for it.. asking 100K USD ...

Other than the water in the bilge, it is in "ok" shape.. but .. 100K USD? the following pictures reflect the overall state of the boat. Like.. not "bad" but certainly not "clean" so to speak..

Hey, I am a believer but it is still damn hard to convince myself to part with 100K for a boat that needs a lot of spit and shine.. hopefully mostly aesthetic but still.

Re: Moody 42: Bluewater family cruiser?

I wouldn't pay top dollar either for a yacht that hasn't been looked after. If the boat isn't clean then what else has been ignored. fuel tank contaminated, water tanks not flushed and bleached regularly, engine and genny not serviced. Sails, rigging and steering? If it was cheap then fine but Yachtworld has half a dozen around the Atlantic ready to go.

Were was this one out of curiosity?

Re: Moody 42: Bluewater family cruiser?

In Malta.. this one isn't in Yachtworld..

I am currently on a boat shopping tour around the mediterranean to find the promised holy Moody

.. but folks really drive the "it's a Moody" thing to the extreme.. kind of off putting to be honest. Same thing happened to me during my skandinavian boot phase. "Oh well, it is a Hallberg-Rassy/Najad/Malö u know.. " come on!!!.. try at least to have a dry bilge during a buyer visit!!

The adventure continues.. I should start yet another Vlog or something

Keep looking, but these boats are generally not cheap. Here's a Moody 42 from the '60's for almost $200,000. 1966 Holman Sloop Sail New and Used Boats for Sale - www.yachtworld.co.uk. There are three old 425's for sale at the moment, all around $100k. These old boats are a lot cheaper in any case than the later Bill Dixon Moody 42's, which don't sell for much under $150,000.

But as others have said -- I wouldn't, personally, be paying a normal price for a boat which has been obviously neglected. What you see on the surface of a neglected boat is usually just the tip of the iceberg. The one on Yachtworld in Sweden looks like a nice one.

Re: Moody 42: Bluewater family cruiser?

I am hearing you cranky!

We walked away from a Hallberg Rassy 45 last year that was being sold for a sizeable amount of freedom chips.

A great design, but the survey confirmed that there were a lot of issues that needed attention and the vendor was unwilling to budge on price because of the HR label attached to his boat.

The Moody 425's are very much of an age where the condition of the vessel and the amount of work done by the previous owner are big considerations.

So um Cranky........something tells me you and I might be looking at a lot of the same boats at the moment and coming to the same conclusions!

The boat looks fantastic, but what are the ages of this family of four? If all four are grown adults, a 42' boat is going to feel very small after awhile.

Which boat? surely not the Moody 425 with the worn out teak cockpit seats?

Yeah and that might be part of the problem .. boats like Moodys, Hallberg-Rassys etc attract a following. An owner lists it and he gets like 50 people interested and he wasn't even expecting such a response.. so he thinks.. wow!.. I got a hot item!.. well.. what they don't realize is that when you come into the market, you are like the new girl who just got transferred to your school.. all the folks already in the market looking to buy immediately check her out. This will subside after some weeks. And then if you haven't sold her quickly to one of the motivated buyers in the market when you arrived, you will have to wait until someone new comes along and bites..

For example, I ran into an apparently very clean and well kept newly listed example for which I was willing to pay 92K USD for. The owner wanted 100K USD. He had listed it "O.B.O" so initially at least he thought he'd have to negotiate and settle for a bit less. But he got such an initial response, that he probably said... no. I want my 100K and not a penny less...

Boat is still listed for sale... I guess we'll just have to wait and see who blinks first in this game of bluff

Two younger kids and two adults.

We have been happily cruising on a 35ft centre cockpit monohull, so 42ft sounds luxurious!

Plenty doing it on bigger boats, plenty have done it on significantly smaller.

For us about 42ft is the sweet spot in terms of big enough, but not too big and within our budget.

Re: Moody 42: Bluewater family cruiser?

I thought I would bump this thread. So in the end we have found a Moody 425 that is in good condition ( but does need a bit of TLC).

Turns out that 'immaculate' 30 year old boats are few and far between!

Here is our little video on the youtube about it.
