I bought my current boat, a 87 Ericson 32, for 19000 in 2008. The broker was asking 38000. Today people are still asking 38000 and more but they are not selling. I have always bought boats at low pricing. I can do anything myself, I couldn't afford any other way.

IF i went to the local rigger and said replace my standing rigging and send me a bill it would be over $7000 (doing it myself is $400), the local foundry would charge $1200 for chain plates (to just get bronze strap is $185), tohve the epoxy barrier coat and anti fouling put on would cost over $3500 and over $1200 for hull paint (materials,supplies any paying for a little labor was $1400)...that is about $2000 vs over $13,000 to have the pros do it

Are you sure about the standing rigging costs. I just spend over $200 on Dyna Dux to just replace my lifelines, and that was at $1.69/foot. The Dux runs about the same as wire but I'm sure you'd have more and then there are fittings.

Maybe he uses Galvanized wire. Some of those older boats use that and they swear by it...or was that at it?

Your $400 figure is not even almost pretty much sorta close. Assume 5/16" 1 x 19 ss caps and 150 ft all up - there's $636. Assume 1/4" lowers and inner forestay at 70 ft all up - there's $235. It would not be too hard to spend $1000 or more on turnbuckles and terminals - you have to make up 7 wires. Four 5/16" turnbuckles alone will cost $460.

304 stainless 5/16th turnbuckles are $16-00 and $19-00 each, depending on type,

4 X $20-00 = $80-00

Where do you get $460-00 from.

You are quoting the price of terminal swages not turnbuckles.

Pricing is much the same from Whitworths or Graingers, both about $20-00 each for stainless turnbuckles.

Beat me to it. Mr B is quoting wire thickness as if it were pin size. Pin size is always more - in this case 1/2" or 12 mm. Similarly, I sure wouldn't use those el cheapo turnbuckles to hold my mast up. Grainger quote the SWL for their 1/2" model at 2200 lb - cool huh ? The Johnson model that I quoted has a SWL of 12,500 lbs. Which one do you want holding up your mast MR B ?

Norseman ones are cheaper if you are OK with the open side style and no top. Westmarine want $180 for the open style Hayn turnbuckles with a top.
