27 ft Hunter Pilot + “Blue water”

Has anyone done “Blue water” or an ocean crossing with a 27 ft Hunter Pilot?

I presume your talking the English Hunter... not the American Hunter which is a different animal...
I'd happily sail one to the Islands from the UK... at the right time of year... tho' I have been known to do stupid things like Biscay crossings in 22ftrs in December as well..

I crewed aboard a 27 foot Hunter ( US) into a chop created by a fairly strong tidal stream running off Sandy Hook New Jersey. The inexperienced owner went below to pick up a few items that had come adrift then shot back up ashen-faced and ordered the boat turned around against my protests. When we got into calmer waters he admitted to being freaked out by the sounds of the creaking bulkheads and thought the boat was coming apart. Boat seemed fine for more protected waters tho.

Such sounds are magnified by the hull, which acts as sort of an acoustical bell. That's why you can hear things like little shrimp nibbling at algae on your hull. I was living aboard my boat when it was hauled out. It was extremely windy one night, and the hull was bumping *ever so slightly* against the boat stands -- so slightly that I couldn't see it when watching.

Nevertheless the sound really creeped me out and I went to a motel for the night.

Oceans have been crossed in anything. It is up to the skipper to decide if his craft is seaworthy.

Mind some passages are 'easier' some are more demanding. Use the tool that is up to the job at hand.

It's always best to have the right tool for the job. Don't try to drive a nail with a screwdriver.

I wouldn't cross the ocean on my boat. I'd love to do it on someone else's blue-water worthy boat.

Me too. Meanwhile, what we have here is a far less than an ideal boat that took us places.

People who are lucky to be able to sail in that perfect boat are indeed double lucky.

The rest of us can either go sailing or die at home.
