Helpful info on sailing from So California to Vancouver. How does your advice differ if one is contemplating sailing from Panama to Vancouver? Thanks!

You have a good chance of southerly winds through March. After that, it's almost guaranteed to be strong northeasterly winds that will make you life miserable. I'd check the weather and see if you can find a window ASAP. Talked with a couple who did it in Tartan 41, they sailed the whole way and only had to duck in once in Oregon to avoid bad weather.

Hawaii should be on your itinerary. The wind and current are against you going up the coast.

You may want to invest in Charlie's Charts of the U.S. Pacific Coast. The book covers strategies for boating up/down the U.S. westcoast and has detailed information on harbors and their facilities.

You can take 40 days offshore or you can take 40 days harbor hopping and picking your weather windows. Either way, it'll take 40 days.... but then, you could get lucky and do it faster. Either way, it's time consuming. Which do you prefer? Passagemaking? or Dinner out every 3-4 days?

I know of a 30' catamaran that made the trip in 30 days or so in February. Who'da thunk?

The trade winds are definitely against you heading north of Hawaii, for the first 1,000 miles, the same distance as going up the coast, after wasting all that easting getting to Hawaii, an extra 2500 miles of wasted mileage..
