Niuatoputapu Anchorage

Does anyone know if the anchorage on the NW corner is suitable for an over night stay. I'll be leaving American Samoa for Fiji and thought I might break up the trip...

Approximately:
15° 55.833' S, 173° 48.593' W

(I don't see the anchor icon on all my charts but it shows on the navionics ones, and can't find anything on the web about it.)

Thanks

It looks like they entered the harbor/bay... I'm looking at the anchorage NW of the island.

I guess I can try to contact them to see if they anchored outside too.

Re: Niuatoputapu Anchorage

Are you talking about the anchor mark on the chart shown? It looks like an exposed ship anchorage. The Soggypaws Tonga Compendium has the waypoints for entering the anchorage behind the reef. Of course you'll have to clear in then.

Yup... it's pretty exposed.

Ok, well maybe I'll just try to get further south to a major Tonga group or just do it non stop to Fiji...

But geez I had strong winds blowing me north from Bora Bora. Pretty squally the last 3 days, could barely make any westing.

Does anybody know if you can clear in at Niuatoputapu? We only ever cleared in at Nuku'alofa.

A.

I cleared in at Niuatoputapu twice, in 1992 and 1997. I'd definitely anchor in the harbor inside the reef.

The trip from Samoa to Tonga is often a tough one. If you are going to end up in Tonga then why not go inside the reef at
Nuiatoputapu and clear in there. It breaks the trip up and the anchorage is reported secure. It is not reported to be that much hassle to clear in there. If you go much further south to Vavau then clearing in at Neiafu is pretty straight forward, if not a fairly long process.

I'm actually not interested in clearing into Tonga, I will only be passing through to Fiji. I just thought it would be nice to see some of Tonga on the way, if at all given the wind and weather... And that's why I will declare my next port as Fiji because I'm not 100% sure I can comfortably make Tonga.
