Re: When Does Buying New Make Sense?

I'll buy new when I can afford it, and used when I can't. Looking at the present collection, I see that three of our current fleet were bought new, two used.

Re: When Does Buying New Make Sense?

I bought a new car........... once.
Worried about it a lot.

Now I buy a vehicle a year old to:

  • maximise depreciation loss
  • gone through its first major service
  • not worry about it.
Same with a boat. I look for either lightly new or quite old. The old ones with a good service record are documented. YOu can tell when on board if the boat has been brought up to spec... Known faults are rectified and a lot of extras are usually added in for the price.

If I had a specific task for a boat.....racing or something...... Id probably custom build or have built.

People who don't read forums. Surprisingly to some life existed before the internet and still exists whilst we are encumbered by it.

If I had the money I would be buying new every time. Same as a car.

Re: When Does Buying New Make Sense?

I bought (or rather ordered) my boat new for two main reasons:
  1. I needed heavily customised boat to fulfill the demands of both Beata and me - it would be extremely difficult and costly to customise an old boat this way.
  2. I planned to keep this boat for very long time.
Cheers

Re: When Does Buying New Make Sense?

I think another market segment that I haven't seen mentioned are new-to-boating buyers... who aren't confident they can properly/safely select from the used boat market. That could also include folks who actually have some boating experience, but might be jumping from one size range (20' to 50'?) or from one class (sail to trawler?) to another.

Re: When Does Buying New Make Sense?

A god portion of the forum members consider a good working knowledge of FRP repair, painting, electrical systems, engine repair and maintenance, marine plumbing, rigging and, marline spike seamanship normal. It's not.

I think the ratio of new/used power boats is much different, for example, more like cars.

---

I've bought new houses and used houses. I've bought new cars and used cars. I don't see it as a big deal either way; it just depends on the deal in front of me.

Clearly someone is buying new boats. It seems unlikely that all these new boat buyers are naive one-percenters who toss away a hundred grand just for the new car smell.

So, who buys the new boats, and why? It must make good sense in some situations, or there would be no production boats in production.
Hi There

Well why buy new because you know you are getting something you have been a part of chosing "eg Colors, Sails, rigs, the layout " shall i go on .. and then you also know that there is not bad history and hopefully your maintenance cost will be lower since it is all brand new.

i for one has chosen this option and personally i don¨t plan to sell my catamaran for the next many years unless i won a huge amouth of money in a lottery "which will require me to play " so that wont happen .
