Re: What is the Nicest, Most Elegant, Most Posh Marina You've Been To?

hmm well that would make the NICEST one South Side Marina, here on Providenciales.

The poshest one we have been in yet would definitely be Albany Marina on New Providence Or maybe it just seemed that way as it was the next place we went after getting hit by lightning in Chub Cay.

I am with you Newt, the fanciest one I was at, was definitely not the nicest. Of course we could start a thread calling for the most user friendly. Like many, I want garbage disposal to be easy, food store to be close, and someone to lend me their car when I need to run parts.

I agree with that. Posh and elegant means not necessarily agreeable unless you have the money to live up to the style and the boat to do it.

For instance one that is certainly elegant and posh is Porto Bonus, you have on the sidewalk lots of Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Porsches, all from the late model, beautiful women around, all the latest and most expensive shops on the waterfront (Cardin, Channel, Yves Saint Laurent, Armani and so on). Huge yachts everywhere. When you arrive with your 40ft boat you will be put away from everything on a far corner and you will find that the toilets are old and not very nice (the guys from the big yachts don't use them) and you will find also that the marina is absurdly expensive as well as all shops and restaurants around.

Not my idea of nice but certainly posh and elegant.

Posh away, I know lots of them very agreeable, with a nice surrounding and a very nice city just by, for instance, Lagos (Portugal) Cartagena (Spain) Almeria (Spain), Alghero (Italy, Sardinia), Ciutadelle (Minorca, Spain).Very nice nice but Posh and elegant obscenely expensive ones, I would join Porto Rotondo (Sardinia) Porto Cervo (Sardinia), Ibiza, Palma de Maiorca, Cannes, Monte Carlo (Monaco), Porto Fino (Italy), Amalfi (Italy).

Nothing for me that totally tops everyone, but two come to mind:

I'm surprised that nothing has popped up from the UAE, or Qatar. I thought for sure one of the shieks in that area would have built a marina to top all others in terms of size or opulence. I've often wondered what these look like in person.

I dunno, Newt. How can you split "nice" and "Luxury" ?

After all, I've seen lots of marina toilets and showers that really were uninviting. But I've never, ever, seen a marble sink, with gilded fixtures, that wasn't spotlessly clean and surrounded by the same inviting standards.

You only find marble, gold, towel attendants, in "luxury" loos, and inevitably, they are also clean.

Maybe there's something to having money after all?

Nice pool, beach, dive center and even room/bar service delivered to your boat!!!

The sand flea problem there is not so nice. They say the stuff they spray 10' from your boat is not harmful to humans but it sure stinks.

Re: What is the Nicest, Most Elegant, Most Posh Marina You've Been To?

Puerto Portals was, & to a degree still is, our home port for the last 20 years. I can tell you the good, bad, and ugly about the place. If you want to buy a 2000 Euro t-shirt or a 6000 Euro handbag, you're in the right place. Also a great place to drop a hundred euro or so on lunch. Best of all, it's a fabulous place to people watch and that is what I enjoy.

It has about 628 moorings ranging in size from one berth built to accommodate the Royal Yacht Brittania & other 200' type yachts. Three of the seven quays are 15 m & up. The other quays decrease from 12 m down to 8 m. The marina is 27 years old, and safe, but the fingers are a bit narrow. The prices to rent are not excessive for this island but their response to the recession was to raise rates. Parking is very difficult.

But: the staff are frequently downright rude. The marineros are unhelpful or always elsewhere. Until the recent recession you had to know someone or, it as has been alleged, bribe the office staff to get a mooring. Last year--finally--they renovated the decrepit & disgusting showers & toilets. Then--get this--they close them to all, including mooring owners & tenants, all day except for a couple of hours in the morning and a couple in the evening!!!

So much for posh...

By the way, how many of you know the origin of the word posh?

Re: What is the Nicest, Most Elegant, Most Posh Marina You've Been To?

early 20th century: perhaps from slang posh, denoting a dandy. There is no evidence to support the folk etymology that posh is formed from the initials of port out starboard home (referring to the more comfortable accommodation, out of the heat of the sun, on ships between England and India).
