Sticky Situations- What Would You Do?

A couple of years ago we were sailing in the Keys for an easy, routine weekend loop between islands. Suddenly all our electronics went out- lights, navigation, everything... after dark.
We were just coming in the cut but hadn't been in this particular cut before so we really needed the navigation.
We whipped out our phone with the Navionics app on it and pinpointed us perfectly and got us safely into dock.
We also used our glow sticks to light up the aft and tied our battery-powered backup nav light to the bow rail.
Thank goodness for backups and thinking ahead.

What situations have you been in that we could all learn from?

I can't help but notice that almost all of your posts are veiled advertisements for Navionics.

And that you are commercially associated with Navionics.

I had one when I was a kid, Wottie: two tomato tins and a length of string. Worked in the dark, too!

It would take a grievous post indeed for me to run to the mods. And even then, it would probably be a post so heinous that I would contact the police instead.

I would have checked the breaker (fuse box) or electrical panel, and reduced the "on" items to bare minimum.

Perhaps he became so enamored of navigational goodies that he forgot to learn elektrix.

Without intending to malign anyone, if I were approaching a dangerous area (or any area where I believed electronic navigational aids were important) and my navigational aids failed, I would retreat to a safe area -- not proceed into danger.

Furthermore, I would expect to have greater traffic and therefore risk of collision within a harbor than on the open sea. If I had no navigation lights, I would prefer to be far from other boats and reduce the possibility of collision. I do have backup navigation lights, but if those, too, failed, I would shine a handheld flashlight on the sails to let my position and course be known and issue a securite on VHF.

Ya mean his magnetic compass, hard copy charts, Mk 1 eyeball, pencil, dividers, parallel rulers and grey matter 'twixt the ears

Sounds like he was coming in Boot key via sisters creek. Those radio towers cause our 12 v systems to go nuts. Thins turned off turn on and vice versa. I hear the locals glow in the dark😀
