Yes that would be a bit** to get over by sailboat. By Kayak is still doable. Though not by me now. Maybe 30 years ago...

I have every intention of living dirt cheap and not breaking any rules. I'm pretty sure what you need the most of is common sense and patience, and the cheap living will follow

Well yeah but... You are subsistence fishing and catch a snook but it's not quite snook season or fish is a tad too long or short. Give it some thought while I clean and eat it.

Could probably get a multihull in there...

THIS you get to see it live in person by RV:

First selling the cabin and moving to Florida is just smart (as I sit looking out at the snow). Buying a used boat and fixing it up when you are working isn't very risky. You can either bailout and take a small loss, mostly on the labor you put in it; continue to live in a marina and enjoy weekend cruising; or untie and take the big trip. You will build your sailing skills faster that you think. While there is a lot to learn this stuff isn't plasma physics.

Re: Shoestring Sailors (Cruising on $500 per month - part II)

By the way, one big advantage of wooden sailboats was that they were biodegradable. At the end boatyards used to strip everything of value and then chop them up into bits to feed the wood stove during the winter. I once wintered over in my boat near a boatbuilder, and all winter long I fed bits of mahogany into my little woodstove--it made the whole marina smell good when the stove was going.
