Do I need replace this raw water hose now

Attached is photo of a short raw water hose from the
Water pump.

It is bulging. I am thinking of replacing while boat is in
water or can it wait ?

In other words is it urgent ?

That hose will load ok the same if you procrastinate another few years.

But there’s no reason to not replace it while in the water either.

If it feels spongy the two layers of hose have separated. If in doubt replace it.

Of course you can replace it in the water, just close the engine water intake sea cock.

I'd push it a lot longer. You want to get every mile you can out of it.

Not as urgent as it will when it fails!

The thing is - you get to choose when and where to perform 'scheduled' maintenance but the boat gets to determine when and where 'unscheduled' maintenance has to be performed.

I prefer the former but YMMV.

Yes, it going to fail sooner rather than later!

This looks like a raw water hose so it should not be getting hot or under any real pressure yet it is swollen - not a good sign.

Can't see a reason not to replace it ASAP. It's not a difficult repair, an hour or less if you have the correct size replacement hose and some good quality, marine-grade hose clamps.

If it blows out, you're not aboard and you left the raw water seacock open, you may end up owning a submarine.

Bulging hoses are failing, simple as that.

That you are even asking this question worries me.

If you care about your boat you will practice preventative maintenance by replacing these kinds of things before they fail. This is an easy fix that should cost less than $5.00 with a short piece of hose.

Do you want salt water all over your engine compartment? Do you want to risk your engine conking out just when you need it?

An ounce of prevention....

That hose looks to be all of 3 or 4 inches long. Replacement hose might cost $1 or 2. Labor to replace? 1/2 hr tops.
Do you ho online to ask if you should buy a cup of Wastebucks coffee? Is your peace of mind worth a dollar or two?

When you install the new hose, go for somewhat narrow hose clamps and double clamp on each end of the hose, always a good idea for critical hose connections.

One thing I have learned in the 5 years I have owned a boat is that if you think something needs to be done or might need to be done soon, take care of it right away. I am constantly amazed how quickly something goes from not too bad to critical. Delaying this minor and easy repair is just not worth the risk

I bought my first boat in 1976. I worked on it diligently for 6 years. When I decided to take off cruising, I replaced all the engine hoses. The insurance company wanted a trip survey.

The surveyor looked at the brand-new hose on the engine. "Replace that hose, " he says..

"But it’s brand new. Three weeks old," says I.

"Replace that hose."

I didn’t. It broke the first day out, halfway between SF and Monterey.

I’d replace it. It’s too small to take a chance.
