Re: Army surplus extractor chute as drouge.

I've never used a drogue but have used a sea anchor. I would think that the extractor chute would be much better as a sea anchor than as a drogue.

In terms of reliability, the Pardeys used BuOrd (Bureau of Ordnance) chutes for years as a sea anchor. I am not sure if they made any stitching modifications.

Use a Jordan Series Drogue!

Jordan Series Drogue

Hundreds of vessels have used this system successfully and no vessels have been lost or capsized after using one in many severe storms.
Why do you only recommend this one? there are lots of drogues

https://www.pbo.co.uk/gear/which-dro...-you-buy-25543

and the database:

Victor Shane's Drag Device Data Base | Using Parachutes, Sea Anchors and Drogues to Cope with Heavy Weather – Over 130 Documented Case Histories

What were the requirements for SailorMak and which drogues will meet his needs?

Because its simply the best, most reliable and proven system for keeping a vessel from capsizing in a storm.

Let me refer you to an article written by John over at Attainable Adventure Cruising:

Re: Army surplus extractor chute as drouge.

Ok, but what was SailorMak asking for when he said small sailboat sailed conservatively? presumably in US waters with good weather forecasts.

When will he be using it, during a squall or a storm to rival The Perfect Storm?

How about crossing a bar perhaps or for emergency steering?

He is looking on e bay, so is there a limited budget?

Will a $60 drogue suffice or does it need to be a £500 JSD?

Susie Goodall lost her Jordan drogue a few days ago. We will have to wait to get the details.

SailorMAK... Before you buy anything you should read Lin and Larry Pardy's Storm Tactics. If I remember it correctly ex MIL chutes (know and Bu-Ord) were the original sea anchors... still used by big fishing vessels. I think the ebay item might be two small for heaving to - Pardy style... which is a option you might like to have when the conditions are past running.

Re: Army surplus extractor chute as drouge.

The article says the drogue line parted.

Do you know that it was a Jordan drogue as it is only referred to as a drogue?

Yes, it was a JSD. The real question is did the line part first, allowing the boat to pitchpole, or did the wave overwhelm the JSD, initiating the upset and the line parted during the event. I doubt if Susie herself knows the answer being that she was below when it happened.

Re: Army surplus extractor chute as drouge.

It will be interesting to get more detail on what happened and the specifics of her setup, including the type of rope used, was the JSD home-made or professionally made, etc. Up until this point, the JSD system has had a perfect record but nothing on this earth stays perfect for long.

You completely dismiss the point that the OP would like to save money. That is like saying to someone who has a rough riding car to just buy a Cadillac.

Forums are great for spending other people's money.

a. The OP's boat is quite small. I think he is planning for slight whoopses, not major voyages.

b. We're talking about the Great Lakes, not the southern ocean. Yes, it gets very rough, but he's not going to be out there in a well developed survival storm. I'm quite sure a single element drogue will serve.

What is an “extractor” chute? A drogue that pulls the main out, maybe?

Used to extract cargo from a C-130 or similar.

Not the drogue...."found that the line attached to the drogue had parted."

Army surplus extractor chute as drouge.

I ask because people chutes are actually pretty flimsy, and the shroud lines are often replaced.
I used to get garbage bags of 550 cord from the riggers at Hunter Armagh Airfield that were shrouds that were replaced.
Cargo extraction chutes ought to be a different animal though, I can only assume they are much stronger.
