To Which Island Would You Sail?

If you could sail to any island in the world, which island would you choose and why?
Would you want to go for a day, a week, a month... forever?
What kind of boat would you want?
Show us on a chart what area you'd choose to anchor.

This would be a horribly tough decision for me since I know there are so many I've never seen.
One of my favorites that I've already seen was the Plana Cays in the southern Bahamas.

The Southeast corner (see maps below) are amazing diving/snorkeling. Absolutely beautiful. Granted, there are no amenities and no people so come prepared.
I'd stay forever if I thought I could be self sufficient that long.

There is an island in the California Delta owned by the Bar Pilots. I'd go back in a heartbeat. No charts available, it's a secret.

Re: To Which Island Would You Sail?

It's kinda a big island, but we keep going back to Tasmania. If the winters were warmer we might never leave!

But Ille Balabio in the northern lagoon of New Caledonia is awfully nice and much warmer.

And Raoul Island in the Kermadecs is so interesting, with active volcanoes, hot springs, a met station and so on...

Shucks, so many islands, so few years...

Re: To Which Island Would You Sail?

Bali Ha'i

Located? Where you imagine it to be…or where you find it.

"Most people live on a lonely island,
Lost in the middle of a foggy sea.
Most people long for another island,
One where they know they will like to be.

Bali Ha'i may call you,
Any night, any day,
In your heart, you'll hear it call you:
"Come away...Come away."

Bali Ha'i will whisper
On the wind of the sea:
"Here am I, your special island!
Come to me, come to me!"

Your own special hopes,
Your own special dreams,
Bloom on the hillside
And shine in the streams.
If you try, you'll find me
Where the sky meets the sea.
"Here am I your special island
Come to me, Come to me."

Bali Ha'i,
Bali Ha'i,
Bali Ha'i!"

Re: To Which Island Would You Sail?

Any Island that the milk run doesnt stop at. Or even a few miles from the major harbors that most yachts stop at can be quiet, isolated anchorages that are wonderful. Too many boats never get off of the beaten path and miss so much. EXPLORE! Grant.

Australia. Lots of varied geography, flora, fauna, and weather, and relatively few people and boats to spoil it.

The main downside is that it is relatively expensive, largely due to government regulations, but that also helps to keep away the crowds and protect the environment.

Fatboys Resort, Mbabanga Island, Gizo, Solomon Islands
Where JFK was hidden during WWII and just happens to have an old sailing bum running the joint by the name of Kennedy. How convenient. Admittedly I first saw this anchorage from the bridge of a super yacht but I'm sure it's just as beautiful at sea level.

Isla Chiloe and the outlying islands.... simply the best unspoilt cruising grounds on the planet.

Banda Neira, Maluku, Indonesia.

But really folks, all the best islands are north of the equator .

And there are some good deals if you want to buy a Greek Island right now...

Hands down, Dominica. Just outstanding natural beauty, and some of the friendliest people in the world. The boiling lake is one of the true wonders of the world, but there are so many exhilarating hikes, and many very qualified guides.

Thanks for the maps, we'll have to check that Island out. For me, I'm only good for a day or two on any one Island. I guess I get bored too easily. Which is why your choice of the Bahamas, is mine as well.

The Bahamas has got more Islands than I could ever get to. Most are uninhabited, which is nice, but there's inhabited ones allowing provisioning and bar hopping scattered throughout the Bahamas.

The native Bahamians are great, honest, helpful, smiling people. The illegal Haitians in the Bahamas, well that's another story quickly ruining the Bahamians good reputation.

Huahine French Polynesia. Off Fare there are a couple of good anchorages. In a blow, over by the reef between the black marker and the green one, a nice deep sand patch. Sat there for days watching the wind blow over 40.
