12 Volt air conditioner may be availabe soon

I came across this Kickstarter project for a 12 volt air conditioner. It only has a capacity of 1,100 BTUs. It might be enough to cool a small cabin.

I don't know anything about it except what I read on the Kickstarter web page. It is supposed to be available next year.

You can google Zero Breeze and find more information about it.

1,000 BTU won't do much at all, I didn't read the article, but it's not voltage that is the issue, its that it takes bunches of power to move enough heat to cool say a sleeping area, bunches.
My little 5,000 BTU pulls 6 amps at 120 VDC, of course that is 60 amps at 12 VDC, assuming same efficiency then 1,100 BTU would cost you 13 amps

1,100 BTUs? That might kill some of the humidity but cooling?

That's about enough capacity to cool a small bathroom 2-3 degrees from ambient. Boat head might cool 5-6 degrees.

Isn't that called a refrigerator ................... with an opening large enough for you to stick your head in?

Re: 12 Volt air conditioner may be availabe soon

I sent a question to their Kickstarter site about current draw. They claim that it will cool a 50 square foot room. They don't say how high the room is, how good the insulation is or the outside temperature.

You can buy it with a built in 40 amp hour battery, they claim 3.5 hours of run time on high and 5 hours on medium. Without knowing the discharge curve for the battery and what percentage of the charge they plan on pulling out of the battery I hesitate to calculate the amperage draw.

I don't have much faith in this being able to cool a cabin when it is 95 degrees outside.

I will be waiting for them to actually being on he market and there are some reports from happy (or unhappy) customers.

50 sq ft? That's just a hair bigger than a king sized bed.

Buy a fan. 12v automotive fans are cheap, and can be fitted with a screen in the forward hatch, running air through the boat.

Not sure if I can get used to 35-40C and >90% humidity which is what the weather has been like in Florida the last 2-3 months.

The final straw is when you are anchored in the wrong place, the winds drop and the mozzies and noseeums attack.

Options: lock yourself below and turn the boat into a sweatbox, leave the hatches and ports open, get eaten alive and expose yourself to mosquito born diseases OR turn on the air conditioning.

Think I would choose door number three.

That would be 5' X 10' , but 0 feet high? Need cubic feet to make sense of it, but my fridge is 14 cu ft for example, I bet a house fridge might be 50 cu ft?

Just looked it up, a house fridge is 25 cu ft, or at least the ones Google found were.

That is to a large extent why I got a generator, I don't think I could stand it, and I do not think she would try for long either.

King sized bed is roughly 7'X7' but yes, without the third dimension the specs are pretty useless. What if I have a room that's 5' wide, 10' long and 25' high? However, I would assume the manufacturer's claim is based on a typical height in an RV so about 7'.

I think our house fridge is 21-22 cu ft. My boat is about 10. Initially I thought that was going to be a lot but as I've started using it more it has shrunk.

I don't want it cold like a lot of people but the temps this summer were just too much. We keep the thermostat at home set around 80-82 and that's just fine. Enough to totally kill the humidity and keep it just cool enough for comfort.

There is a company that is at the Miami boat show every year with a 12v air conditioning unit...the name escapes me...anyone else see it? It's more of a cabin cooler.

And why would you assume that? Anyone that advertises that it's product will cool 50 sq. ft. instead of a proper measurement (cu. ft.) is not exactly being honest. When it comes to people hawking their wares I take nothing for granted.
