Re: EDSON PEDeSTAL

Might as well get in line. Have one in Hawaii complete with idler sheaves, quadrant, and 28" wheel.

theres a hole in the deck of the cockpit where the old pedistol was. the controls are just a throttle , its stainless steel, the old compass enclosure was aluminum. I need a pedistol about 3' high w/ wood steering wheel, and compass send me some pics of what u have with dementions and price and i will be in touch with you . I am in Wilmington , Ca. today

Have you taken a trip down to Minney's in Costa Mesa yet? I always see at least one or two pedestals, and I go just about every other week.

Re: EDSON PEDeSTAL

I love it...I have the feeling everyone went back to the simple, cheaper tiller set up...

How many years ago did someone invent the wheel? You stick people should move up to the age that started many thousands of years ago. Lol. I ain't never giving up my wheel! It was the number one item on the trade up boat list a year ago and number one it stays after one sailing season.

I see Edson helms on eBay all the time. Follow the leads in this thread or go on line and a wheel will soon be yours.

Mind you, putting one in so it works like a factory original would be way over my pay grade. Way over. Chance it will be over yours also.

I gussied my helm up with a trade from a 20" to a 30" wheel for one or two hundred bucks, can't remember. LOVE THE DIFFERENCE !

I also added a pedistal guard I purchased on this site for fifty bucks. Sweet!

Because of my traveler location, I did not need to bolt my pedistal guard down by drilling into the cockpit floor. I set the guard in 1" crutch tips and clamped it to the traveler beam.

Funny there are so many pedestals here for sale. I sold mine within a month of converting to tiller last year.
Don't know why anyone with a smaller boat would want a wheel- love the feel and extra space. Now my two toddlers can free roam through cockpit without getting hung up on wheel!

My Hallberg Rassy has both...a hydraulic system which works and a tiller which comes off easily. Being an aft cabin, the tiller could be a minor hindrance but not a big deal. I have a hydraulic by-pass valve to steer with the tiller (much faster than a wheel. If I see nay foreseeable (expensive) problems with the hydraulic system, I will eliminate it altogether and not look back. Like you say....it frees up the cockpit which is where I tend to spend most of my time.
