Waypoins and routes suddenly all gone, is there a way to get them back?

Hi,

I couldn't find an answer to my question anywhere in the documentation nor on this forum so I hope someone can help.

I have Open CPN running on an Android tablet and I'm really happy with it! But this morning I accidentally closed all programs on my tablet and after this I restarted Open CPN and suddenly all waypoints + routes were gone. I have very important waypoints and I need them very soon so I'm stressed now!

Is there a way to get waypoints back? Are they backed-up somewhere? Can I somehow access them or rename an old file so Open CPN knows it should use that file?

Anyone who can be of any help or knows whether there is a better way to ask for help to this question?

Thanks!!!!

Thumbs up Re: Waypoins and routes suddenly all gone, is there a way to get them back?

Fixed the problem!!

In case someone else is looking for the same thing:

Find the folder on your device that contains the files navobj.xml* files In my case there were several of these files and when I looked at the biggest (most kb), I saw all my waypoints. That one was called navobj.xml2 I renamed that one to navobj.xml after I checked that one indeed didn't contain any info.

Make sure you CLOSE OpenCPN BEFORE doing this. Then, when starting OpenCPN, it uses the correct file and all the waypoints and routes are there again To be sure not to lose anything, copying the text of the good xml file before renaming it, might be a good idea.

P.S. It must be a bug that this happened. Do developers read here?

To add to this for people without computer-knowledge: don't be fooled by a bigger number. In my case the empty file navobj.xml had a size of about 335B and the one with all info had a size of about 37KB. That's KiloBytes. Just view the files.

Re: Waypoins and routes suddenly all gone, is there a way to get them back?

Waypoints and routes and tracks are stored in navobj.xml files. There are about five of them saved as backups with numbers.

Don't reopen or restart your opencpn any more until you find and save your navobj.xml somehere else. This file gets saved to one of the backups each time you open O.

Next, go to the user manual,
If you don't know where that is look on the website opencpn.org

Then in the user manual search on navobj.xml there is a full description of this backup system.

Do not start Opencpn until you do this.

Re: Waypoins and routes suddenly all gone, is there a way to get them back?

Having multiple routes on screen at the same time tends to cause a cluttered display. When I create a route I export it as a GPX file. I delete unused routes from OpenCPN. When I need them again I import the GPX file. Importing and exporting GPX files are actions initiated by the user, so you don't have to worry about accidentally overwriting a file when you close or start OpenCPN.

You can, of course, export all your routes and waypoints into a single GPX file but then you can't recall them separately. A little thinking about how to manage your route and waypoint files will save you from a lot of inconvenience when OpenCPN occasional misbehaves.

Fabbian This would be an excellent addition to the manual with a link under routes, and description under navobj backups?

I have updated the user manual with a discussion about creating and managing routes. Look in the Create Route and Route & Mark Manager pages in the Toolbar Buttons section.
