Re: OpenCPN Version 5 Beta Release 4.99.1517 (RC1)

Available MBtiles datasets are now limited to some full-coverage (fully-connected tiles) datasets like satellite imagery or WMS/TMS-clones.
All tilesets in openCPN are rendered starting from the lowest zoom-level (0) up to a higher zoom-level (20) upon zooming in in the interface. This higher zoom-level tile is then rendered on top of the lower zoom-levels. (Is this true?)
Well for fully-connected tiles without any transparency this is not a problem, and actually works very nice.

Another case is mbtiles with transparency. I dont see immediate purposes for semi-transparent tilesets, but I do see some purposes for just 'objects' on a chart. Think polygons, lines, text etc (see image below).

The above described behaviour then becomes a problem upon rendering.
I believe for the full-coverage datasets this can increase performance. But I also think we dont need this in all cases. Is it possible to differentiate this for different datasets (metadata?) or even a simple switch in the menus?

Not in OpenCPN 5.0.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 Beta Release 4.99.1517 (RC1)

I can confirm the bug displaying skewed raster charts with OpenGL off has been fixed. My Windows 7 computer will run for a few minutes with OpenGL turned on before it crashes (blue screen, Windows restarts). During that short period before it crashed I noticed there were buttons for three skewed raster charts in the chart selection line. I was centered on the mouth of the Caloosahatchee River. When OpenGL was turned off only one button for a skewed raster chart appeared, though I could see the chart outlines for the others. When I zoomed in and moved to the regions covered by those "missing" skewed raster charts the charts appeared.

Should there be a difference in what charts are indicated as available with OpenGL on or off?

I'm just interested in the behaviour/rendering of mbtiles zoom-levels and transparency. For 'basemaps' (satellite or whatever) it works fine already, If we want to use 'overlay' type of mbtiles, the behaviour should be changed I think.

This indicates you have the wrong version.

Look with Synaptic to the server ppa adresses and see if you have the right version for your Linux. Xenial or Bionic etc.

Have you allready installed a former version of OpenCPN ? Then the update of Xenial works.

If your doing it with a complete new version of Xenial. Then there are errors about gshhs and tcdata. Then you have to install the 4.88 version first by changing the server adress to opencpn/opencpn. For the version 5 RC1. the server adress is bdbcat/opencpn.

In the final version these problems will be solved.

Here on my RPI with Linux Stretch the version is Xenial.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 Beta Release 4.99.1517 (RC1)

Bram...

It is OK to have BOTH repo addresses setup at one time. The system will pull the necessary files from either repo, always choosing the most current one. Not necessary to pre-install 4.8.8 if both repos are active.

As you say, this problem disappears on Release.

Thanks
Dave

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 Beta Release 4.99.1517 (RC1)

So I need to have both repos in my sources list? The "release" one worked, but I apt-get removed it ... should I put it back before trying to pull the beta one in?

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 Beta Release 4.99.1517 (RC1)

My additional sources list is:

deb Index of /opencpn/opencpn/ubuntu xenial main
deb https://launchpad.net/~bdcat/+archive/ubuntu/ xenial main

The error when I run apt-get update has this at the tail:

Ign:6 https://launchpad.net/~bdcat/+archive/ubuntu xenial/main all Packages
Err:7 https://launchpad.net/~bdcat/+archive/ubuntu xenial/main armhf Packages
404 Not Found
Ign:8 https://launchpad.net/~bdcat/+archive/ubuntu xenial/main Translation-en
Ign:9 https://launchpad.net/~bdcat/+archive/ubuntu xenial/main Translation-en_GB
Reading package lists... Done
W: The repository 'https://launchpad.net/~bdcat/+archive/ubuntu xenial Release' does not have a Release file.
N: Data from such a repository can't be authenticated and is therefore potentially dangerous to use.
N: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details.
E: Failed to fetch https://launchpad.net/~bdcat/+archiv...armhf/Packages 404 Not Found
E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

When I run "apt-get install opencpn" I just get 4.8.8 ...

Check spelling.

"bdcat" is not the same as "bdbcat"

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 Beta Release 4.99.1517 (RC1)

I did note one bug on the Windows variant at least.

If you shrink the window to a small size, the left hand button strips protrudes out of the bottom of the window. If you close the window and restart opencpn, the strip is now contained within the window, with two vertical columns of buttons.

Expanding the window does not at any point cause the buttons to expand to a single column again, unless you close and restart opencpn ...
