OpenCPN puts Track Point at Lat Long Zero

Occasionally I find that my track does a quick nip to the equator (0 deg N, 0 deg E) and back again. This has happened several times in the last few days. I am not sure if it happens as a result of switching on the GPS while OpenCPN is already open, and then it records the zero point before the GPS fully acquires a position, or what. Or maybe it is connected with waking up from hibernate. But it is always the very first point recorded for the day, and is very annoying.

But what is more annoying is there does not seem to be a way to remove a single point (leg) from the recorded track. If I could do that, I could instantly clean it up, but can't find a way to do that.

I did try to split the track and then delete the errant leg, but both times I tried that it crashed - a crash report was sent.

Can I suggest that you put in a filter so that any plots for EXACTLY lat 0 and long 0 are ignored? This would not affect real world navigation as the very next plot is going to be a few meters away and so will be plotted as per normal.

I am using 3.3.1419

Any suggestions?

The 0,0 point is most likely recorded because your GPS sends it, not a good idea to try to be too smart in handling these situations IMO.
Anyway - it is easy to get rid of the erroneous points - export track as GPX, edit it in a decent text editor (delete the <trkpt> element you don't like), import it back.

Speaking of recording....

Perhaps you could install the VDR PlugIn and capture the NMEA log when you first turn on the GPS. Maybe we will see the errant point, with status reported as "Valid", and position as 0,0.

Would be good to understand this.

Sure. I don't know exactly when it happens, so it is hard to reproduce it, and it hasn't happened the last few days, so obviously I am doing something different now, but yes, I will turn on the VDR routinely for a while and grab it next time I see it happen.

Here is the VDR recording from the moment that I turned on my chartplotter and AIS. You will see that in lines 112, 115, 117, 135, 141 and 146 there is, indeed, an output with a lat long of zero for $GPGGA, $GPGLL and $GPRMC. However, in between there are also some outputs that look normal.

On watching the screen, the boat position momentarily moved from here to the equator and then back again a few times, but on this occasion it did not actually record a track.

I then turned off the chartplotter and AIS, leaving OpenCPN on. After a moment, suddenly there is a track from here to the equator and back again!

I tried to reproduce all this but did not succeed. I have it set to automatic daily tracks but did not get a repeat of the track showing up. I replayed the output and that didn't create a track either.

I also tried the chartplotter without AIS but got no 0,0 output. Then I tried with the AIS on again, but no 0,0 plot that time. Then the next time I did get a few 0,0. It does seem to be an initial powering up, finding satelites thing.

I am trying to figure out if the 0,0 plot is coming from the AIS or the chartplotter (they have separate GPS antennae, multiplexed together through shipmodul, with one having priority over the other (can't remember which way around I set it). But so far haven't been able to figure that out, either.

I still think a filter to remove a 0,0 plot would make sense, as a real-life 0.000, 0.000 plot (to 3 decimals) is both extremely unlikely and, in any case, would last for only one second until one had moved a few meters.

So, you are correct that the GPS is providing a 0,0 NMEA sentence, but I don't know why or from where! Nor do I understand why sometimes these result in a track being recorded while at other times, thought the boat position goes back and forth to the equator a few times, no track is recorded. Or why, that one time, the track was recorded AFTER I turned off the MMEA stream.

One other thought. I notice that each time I turn on the AIS I get a few $AIALR outputs, and then they settled down. This seems to just be a powering-up thing. But if it were not, ie if the alarm states continued, I would still not know about them. I wonder if we can have something in CPN that tells you if there is an alarm message being sent so that one can then go and investigate? I don't know what range of alarm sentences exist, but just a thought.

Any more thoughts about all this?

what is your set-up of the devices - GPS, AIS, etc.? Who feeds what? Are there various GPS sending? From which unit does the $GPxxx come from?

Is the posted stream right from the beginning? If "yes", then the first outputs of the GPS are 0,0 ones. Would be the question to the manufacturer if this is correct.
What happens if you power only and only the GPS up?

Down the stream there are error messages from the AIS:

Something wrong with the power supply? The device tells you that the 12V, 6V and 3.3V legs are failing. Some connection that is jumping and resetting devices? And producing ugly noise?
