OpenCPN does not directly control the system interface to the trackpad. The operating system sends "mouse events" to the wxWidgets libraries. The events are "cooked" slightly, and then are then sent to OpenCPN. For instance, it must be the case that a multitouch "zoom-out" by two finger spread gets cooked into a mouse wheel event, which OCPN understands as a zoom action.

As a result, we cannot easily change the sensitivity, or other attributes, of the touch pad from within OpenCPN.. I wonder if there is a Mac control panel for this sort of thing? Or an external applet for control?

I guess I'll need to get ahold of a Macbook, and play with this effect to understand it a little better.

I'm thinking ahead, here, expecting to do some revisions to the UI as more affordable, high performance Windows tablets come to market later this year. I just read a note about an IP-65 (i.e. waterproof) Win8 tablet from Japan......think about that, if you will

As a reference: https://www.google.com/maps/preview using a MacBook. The response and sensitivity for multi touch zoom is perfect. Google probably put a lot of effort into it.

Some ideas:

- Clear the event queue as soon as the mouse wheel direction changes
- Only queue a certain number of zoom events
- Do not directly translate a mouse wheel event to a zoom event, but instead use an indirect system. When the user turns the mouse wheel (or uses multitouch), add more zoom events at a certain rate (depending on mouse wheel speed).

Of course, all OS could benefit from these changes, not only OS X.

I have no idea if the API:s to do this is in place, but if they are, these changes won't be so difficult.

I deleted CM93. No difference.

Renamed opencpn.conf to opencpn.conf.bak so next time I started OpenCPN I'd get the welcome and no charts installed messages. Tried loading "charts". No change. Tried loading ../charts/CM93_2 . No difference. US CM93 charts will simply not display. CM93 displays up to about 20 degrees north, then nada. Hawaii, east does not display. Australia and points in between display CM93 o.k...

The charts I am using now were copied from a USB stick, totally isolated from my laptop. These same charts work fine in OpenCPN running in chroot environment on my tablet.

"Use vector charts" and "use CM93 charts" is set to "0" again in opencpn.conf - even though vector charts are enabled and options selected in chart settings. With these settings should any of the CM93 charts display?

Moved /.opencpn/cm93 out of the way.
Deleted opencpn.conf
Renamed chartlist.dat chartlist.bak
Deleted opencpn.log to get fresh information.

Restarted OpenCPN that did not present the welcome message. Started loading charts instead.

No change, US territorial charts do not display.

/.opencpn/cm93 is empty...

Out of curiosity I copied /home/username/.opencpn from my tablet to the laptop.

One but not both of available CM93 charts works now. (icons across bottom of OpenCPN window).

For some reason the CM93 database is not registering correctly. No?

I find it difficult to follow what you are doing with the config files , and why.
To get a hold on this....
Use the standard graphical interface to load just one CM93 directory in "Loaded charts", then do a "Force Full Database Rebuild".
Do you still have problems with CM93 ?

Also.....

Check that the CM93 directory was correctly copied from the USB stick with MD5.

Any editing of opencpn.conf must only take place when OpenCPN is shut down, otherwise it will be overwritten.

Removed all of opencpn files and directories from system/home.
Recompiled and installed.

Before upgrading OpenCPN the CM93 charts of the U.S. territories on my computer were recognized and displayed.

I copied the charts from the USB stick to rule out the possibility my charts on the computer were damaged. Named that directory CM93_2. Even after deleting my original chart directory, CM93, and force rebuilding the database the problem persisted using CM93_2

Regarding the configuration files. I copied them over from an OpenCPN environment where this problem does not exist. The result is that one of two charts available, given the view, displayed properly. With a new Linux installation, all things remaining the same, copying over /home/username/.opencpn typically copies your OpenCPN environment and saves time and effort having to import routes, marks and waypoints.

The question is, what is happening in my tablet OpenCPN installation that properly registers the U.S. CM93 charts - evidenced by the configuration files copied from there to my computer - that is not happening with my OpenCPN installation on the computer?

In /home/username/.opencpn/cm93 are two files:

home_armido_charts_cm93_00300600_coverset_sig.A and home_armido_charts_cm93_coverset_sig.A

In opencpn.conf UseVectorCharts and UseCM93Charts - whether OpenCPN is running or after OpenCPN has exited are set to "0". Changing them to "1" with an editor makes no difference because they revert to "0".

CM93 chart settings are "Mariner's Standard" with all options selected. Detail level 2. 2 Colour.

Here's pertinent contents of opencpn.log following new OpenCPN installation.

This opencpn.log is the first following a fresh installation after removal of all opencpn directories and files in system/home.

No idea why, but the charts now display properly. ???

Permissions for /home/username/charts is rwx-rwx-rwx.

You are no doubt correct. But, why do the charts display properly when the CM93 file set is located at /home/username/CM93 but not when /home/username/charts/CM93?

It may be possible to use a program like krename to fix the problem if it exists throughout the set. if krename cannot be used, I'm open to suggestions how to fix the file structure.

I am hesitant to download CM93 nowadays from the internet and other sailors who may have the charts are non-existent at my location. A download attempt may be my only alternative though.

I used 'fdupes' to isolate the problem to 00300600. The entire CM93 file system was somehow inadvertently copied to that directory.

Still wonder though, why the charts only displayed when CM93 was moved to /home/username from /home/username/charts...
