Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.719 Released

Tested OpenCPN 3.3.719 on OS X 10.8.4. The performance improvement is great! Thanks a lot for all your effort.

The only issue I found was that the green plus sign in the upper left corner of the window does not do anything (nothing happens when you click it).

User friendly related:

Using this new version, if you enable zoom to cursor, it is possible to navigate the chart by zooming and unzooming (since zooming is now so fast). However, if you start zooming and then starts to unzoom (using the touchpad), some zoom events is still on the queue. It would be better if the queue was immediately cleared if you start unzooming (or stops zooming using the touchpad).

Also the "watch symbol" (equivalent to windows hourglass) is shown when you zoom. Since zoom is now so fast, this is somewhat annoying (the cursor just flickers). Option to turn off?

In my opinion, the route manager should always be on top.

Dave..

When will OCPN be compatible with the new .grb2 format for streams?

I don't know, but surely not before we we get a well formulated Feature Request for it in the Flyspray tracker....

Dave..

Not 100% sure,BUT,I think it was requested SOME time ago.
Only ONE provider of stream data in .grib2 format in Europe.

However,I believe Zygrib supports this new stream .grib2 format but the download prog incl. maps are 121 MB.

Stensmo...

I am not clear on the following point:

I don't understand what you mean specifically by the "touchpad".
Can you clarify this point (again), please?

Anyone else comment on "Zoom to Cursor" ?

Thanks
Dave

I use Zoom to Cursor and its excellent! One of the reasons why OpenCPN is vastly better than anything on iPad/touch screens or fixed chartplotters.
I could never use the touch pad for zooming (or anything else) and didnt know it could pan (left click) till just now.

With Zoom to Cursor I can create a route of a few far distant points faster than I can lay one waypoint in iPad.

Navigating up and down any large bit of country/countries/oceans etc is so quick and easy

To anyone who hasnt used it before: zoom out from where you are miles up into space till you see the next island (whatever) then just move the mouse over while you zoom back down. No clicking, just zooming.
When your brain gets adjusted to the speed things happen, and you learn the geography, you will be amazed

The version 3.3.719 seems OK with zoom to cursor using CM 93. Unfortunately the system is closing (bug) when ever you are trying to use CHS S57.

The touchpad, a.k.a. Trackpad, is the replacement for a mouse on a macbook. Using two fingers, one can zoom in OpenCPN, but it is somewhat hard to control, since the events are queued.

I have begun to use OpenCPN in the same way as MarkJ, and its a great way to navigate the charts. But fixing the event queue woud make it even easier.

Hello.
I use OpenCPN 3.3.719 on MacBook with OSX 10.6.8
It doesn't seem possible to select a Grib file, other than the last one opening by default.
Items are grey in the select list so nothing can be choose.
Did I miss something ?

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.719 Released

Dave/Pavel..

After an unsuccessful import of a simple route.gpx file to Android´s MarineNavigator, created in OpenCPN,I received the following advice which is a bit over
MY expertise. Perhaps you could have a look at it and make any updates necessary?

Quote:
Hi Tore,

the .gpx file you have sent to me is not a valid xml document. Therefore, it is rejected by the XML-parser.
The namespace declaration for the prefix opencpn (used in element <extensions>) is missing.
<?xml version="1.0"?><gpx version="1.1" creator="OpenCPN" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1" xmlns:gpxx="http://www.garmin.com/xmlschemas/GpxExtensions/v3" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1 http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1/gpx.xsd"> <rte> <name>Farsund til Kirkehamn</name> <extensions> <opencpn:guid>5de8ffff-778c-44a0-a79b-6cc828c30000</opencpn:guid> <opencpn:viz>1</opencpn:viz> </extensions>

The prefix gpxx is not used in the document. Just change the namespace declaration of gpxx to opencpn and the document will be parsed successfully.

<gpx version="1.1" creator="OpenCPN" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1" xmlns:opencpn="http://www.garmin.com/xmlschemas/GpxExtensions/v3" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1 http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1/gpx.xsd">

This should be fixed in OpenCPN.

Best regards,
Ronald

Zoom using two fingers on the trackpad is a tad sensitive, would be nice if multitouch was better utilised like double tap one finger to zoom in one increment and double two fingers to zooms out one increment. Like iPhones/ iPads.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.719 Released

Hello Macbook Users...

Thanks for your comments re/ multitouch zooming. I had no idea that Macbooks supported multitouch on the touchpad.

OpenCPN does not directly control the system interface to the trackpad. The operating system sends "mouse events" to the wxWidgets libraries. The events are "cooked" slightly, and then are then sent to OpenCPN. For instance, it must be the case that a multitouch "zoom-out" by two finger spread gets cooked into a mouse wheel event, which OCPN understands as a zoom action.

As a result, we cannot easily change the sensitivity, or other attributes, of the touch pad from within OpenCPN.. I wonder if there is a Mac control panel for this sort of thing? Or an external applet for control?

I guess I'll need to get ahold of a Macbook, and play with this effect to understand it a little better.

I'm thinking ahead, here, expecting to do some revisions to the UI as more affordable, high performance Windows tablets come to market later this year. I just read a note about an IP-65 (i.e. waterproof) Win8 tablet from Japan......think about that, if you will

Thanks again
Dave

ChuckSK...

Looking at your patch for GPXCreateWPT:

Any particular reason we need to move the
Code:
       <type>WPT</type>
key down the list to just ahead of the extensions?

Dave

That is the order the keys are listed in the GPX 1.1 Schema Document.

Garmin HomePort would not accept the file if the keys were not in that order.
